I can't find search words to find stats but I want to know how often people just stop having seizures, like maybe only had them as young adults and then they stopped.

Like migraine headaches. They usually don't continue after middle age. Seizures and migraines are related.

Becky,

I had two tonic clonic (grand mal) seizures back in the early and middle 1980s. I have had none since then.

I had what were probably simple partial seizures that continued for years, but they got less severe and less frequent over time until they stopped altogether. I mean, I guess I could still have one any time, it just hasn't seemed to happen for years.

I never saw a doctor about them, though, so maybe I'm wrong.

If I let the dentist pull out all my daughter's teeth and then refuse to put in implants because of seizure fear, and then if she stopped having seizures shortly after, I'd feel so much regert. Thanks for the posts.

I had temporal lobe seizures (impaired consciousness, not loss of consciousness) from approximately 1979 to 1997. I had about 4 a year then suddenly they stopped.

My health care provider tells me that that is not uncommon for seizures to stop around menopause due to hormone changes, however I am still having periods and my latest blood test says I am not menopausal yet (soon, I hope, I am ready to be done with it all!). They never did discover why I had them or why I stopped.

I KNOW that my daughter's seisures are hormone related. They started shortly after puberty and happen right before her periods, except whti Depakote, it's all random so I can't predict when the seizures will happen like I used to.

There is very little known about the hormone seizure connection. I want to get my daughter on Depo Prevera to see if it makes a difference.

Like many individuals with an ASD, I had seizures when little (<3); they were usually brought on by fevers, and they were quite severe in their frequency and severity (hospitalised). I took Tegretol for several months that seemed to work; they stopped happening (they went on to myoclonus when I had a fever, that went too).

I get migraines now (started in high school).

Migraines a couple times a month from age 28 to 50. Stopped suddenly at age 50 with only one over the next ten years.

No obvious reason or explanation for the change.

These were fairly light or incomplete migraines, more of a pre-migraine....I'd have the blind spot move across my field of vision, which took about 20-30 minutes and then my vision would return to normal and I'd have a dull ache on one side of my head and feel a bit weak for the rest of the day. Usually I could continue working. It was a bit dangerous if I was driving when the blind spot came.....but I could keep driving if I had to by just using the field of vision that I did have.

But.....whenever possible I'd take a nap and that was by far the best resolution of the matter. Problem was.....it was not usually practical to take a nap. For some reason, I hardly ever took aspirin or anything for this.

Glad it's over.

My son had a big seizure at the age of 8, and possibly had a second seizure at the babysitter's (which I didn't witness, so I'm not sure of it). He was put on anti-seizure drugs for some time (tegretol). He's been off the medication for quite a while, maybe 8+ years, and has not had any seizures since then.

My brother, who's 50, had his first seizures as a teenager, due to encephalitis. He doesn't like to take the medication and so he hasn't been taking it. I'd say he has a seizure maybe every ten or twelve years?

He had one recently, my mother told me. Before that, the last one was when I had babies/toddlers (who are now almost adults). At the time, he was living alone, and was fortunate that someone stopped over a few hours later & realized what was up. That time, he broke both of his shoulders during the seizure. I remember him telling me that his friend called for an ambulance, and when the paramedics arrived my brother was confused & asking the friend what they were doing there, even got a little combative with them when they tried to convince him to get in the ambulance. (He was conscious, sort of, but not his usual consciousness.)

I have had only one seizure that I'm aware of involving loss of consciousness. I would not have known had my mother not been present when it happened. As far as I could tell I had simply teleported to the floor. For years I had episodes of weird perceptual shifts lasting several minutes. My body would feel a little bit like clay, and music became discordant. It was never unpleasant. This hasn't happened again in 7 years. It could have been migraine aura without infarction, I suppose. I never saw a doctor about it because it didn't bother me.

I had some seizures in my mid teens. They stopped suddenly.

I had seizures as an infant that probably triggered my AS, but I suddenly outgrew them when I was a toddler, and haven't had a seizure since then. I do get migraines occasionally, and they started when I was in high school. Migraines actually run in my family as my mom and brother have had them.

My brother has epilepsy, but that was caused by a head injury from a bad car accident when he was a teenager, but medication has kept that under control for now.

Last grand mal/tonic clonic seizure I had was around Memorial Day 1998... haven't had a full-blown one since that time.

I had various focal temporal lobe seizures for about a year and then had a grand mal. I was put on medication after that and only had the occasional aura. After about two years, I tried tapering off the medication and was off the meds for about a month. I had a few focal seizures, but (stupidly) didn't go back on the medication. About a month later, I was camping and had a few beers. As I came down from the alcohol that evening, I had a series of 'stat' grand mal seizures, which continued for about 30 minutes as I rode in an ambulance. I have very little memory of any of the details, except for brief flashes between seizures, but it was definitely a frightening experience (even more so for my partner.) I've been back on medication ever since and now I don't think I ever want to risk going off the meds.
