Weird Al's "Since You've Been Gone"

What song is that parodying BTW?

About half of Weird Al's songs are completely original. (Each album since the second has also included a "style parody", in which the style of a particular group is mocked. My personal favorite is "Albuquerque", from Running With Scissors - a brilliant parody of the style of a Southern California bar band called the Rugburns, especially of their song "Dick's Automotive".)

More on-topic, Supertramp, "Hide In Your Shell":

Hide in your shell
'Cause the world is out to bleed you for a ride -
What will you gain,
Making your life a little longer?
Heaven or Hell,
Was the journey cold that gave you eyes of steel?
Shelter behind
Painting your mind and playing joker

(Too frightening)
To listen to a stranger
(Too beautiful)
To put your pride in danger
(You're waiting for)
Someone to understand you.
But you've got demons in your closet
And you're screaming out to stop it
Saying life's begun to beat you,
Friends are out to cheat you,
Grab onto what you can scramble for -

Don't let the tears linger on inside you,
'Cause it's sure time you gained control -
If I can help you, if I can help you,
If I can help you, just let me know,
Oh, let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road -
If I can help you, if I can help you,
If I can help you, just let me know...

All through the night,
As you lie awake and hold yourself so tight,
What do you need?
A second-hand movie star to tend to?
I, as a boy,
I believed the saying the cure for pain was love -
How would it be
If you could see the world through my eyes?

(Too frightening)
The fire's becoming colder
(Too beautiful)
To think you're getting older
(You're looking for)
Someone to give an answer -
What you see is just illusion
You're surrounded by confusion
Saying life's begun to beat you,
Friends are out to cheat you,
Grab onto what you can scramble for

Don't let the tears linger on inside you,
'Cause it's sure time you gained control -
If I can help you, if I can help you,
If I can help you, just let me know,
Oh, let me show you the nearest signpost
To get your heart back and on the road -
If I can help you, if I can help you,
If I can help you, just let me know...

I wanna know, I wanna know,
I wanna know, oh, I want to know,
I want to know you, I want to know you
I want to know you, oh, I want to know you,
I want to feel you, oh, I want to touch you,
Please let me near you, let me near you,
Can you hear what I'm saying?
Oh, I'm hoping, I'm dreaming, I'm praying,
I know what you're thinking,
See what you're seeing,
Never ever let yourself go,
Hold yourself down, hold yourself down -
Why must you hold yourself down?
Why don't you listen, you can trust me,
Oh, there's a place I know the way to,
A place there is no need to feel you
Feel that you're all alone,
Oh, won't you hear me?
I know exactly what you're feeling,
'Cause all your troubles are within you,
So begin to
See that I'm just bleeding to
Love me, love you,
Loving is the way to
Help me, help you -
Why must we be so cool?
Oh, so cool -
Oh, we're such damned fools...

This is a sort of love song in reverse, about the trappings of a dysfunctional relationship.
Wanted to post ages ago, but its only just become youtube-able Smile

Eyedea & Abilities - Paradise

What a beautiful world, so fragile and fertile
Pain filled the void when boy met girl
He’s a puppet to nature, one year later
Now so deeply and sickly in love it makes him hate her
The average romanticized American relationship
Sinks, capsized when either side becomes a slave to it
Conditioned, dependent, afraid to be alone
He needs that feeling that he can’t create all on his own
He despises the fact she has a life outside of him
It drives him crazy to think she’s not insanely consumed with him
Give her the guilt-trip and maybe she’ll quit living,
To stay behind his prison walls and lose all individualism
Well this is happiness, masochistic torture
Played by the decadent, craved of affection
The needle digs deep to push contentment through his bloodstream
And drown out hollow, the pothole of a junkie
If he could only hear her sing, he wouldn’t want to break her wings
But emptiness has such a warm, subtle sting
She makes up for what he lacks, trapped,
He can’t imagine life without someone like that

Chorus:
We’ve rediscovered the long-lost art of dying
Only the lonely resent angels for flying
Twisted, living off of each other’s sickness like parasites
This is paradise

We’ve rediscovered the long-lost art of dying
Only the lonely resent angels for flying
Addicted, afraid to take control of my own life
This is paradise

Verse 2:
What a beautiful world, emotionally destroyed
her became plural when girl met boy
Between several breakups and plenty relapses
Routine bred-comfort led to serious attachment
Now every once in a while she forgets to breathe
Terrified of losing him, paradise is misery
Too much faith in the life-saving knight in shining armour
Now her knight’s noticing the scars she can’t hide any longer
But they were her story way before he was
It was gross hope to think he could heal such deep cuts
At first it felt so right but after one too many fights,
He turned out that hallway light and all the wonder turned to spite
So they sleep in the same bed with guns to each others’ heads
Dead to romance, boiling the blood that painted roses red
Suffering from post-honeymoon disease, bleached through
His whole existence, she’ll die if he decides to leave
Addicted to the way she feels when they spend time together
Detouring the now in a childish attempt to find forever
Despite the fact they hold each other heart to heart
You can’t be that close to somebody without being so far apart

Chorus

Silence, the most obscure sound I’ve ever heard
Those lonely, giant spaces in between your every word
And maybe, I’m totally crazy for holding on but
Just cus I’m insane, don’t mean that I’m wrong
Now that you’re gone I can’t sleep at night
I barely even function right, my memory’s on overdrive
Too hungry and too cold to cry
Miss the companionship I once took for granted
The way you helped me manage, the partnership that vanished
But I don’t expect you to stay chained by the ankle,
There’s so much world to see so, fly free my angel
I’m dying without you, but it’s teaching me to live
Heaven ain’t something someone else can give
It’s all inside of me

Chorus

There’s so much world to see
What’s stopping me from flying free?
There's so much world to see
What's stopping you from flying free?
(Repeat to Fade)

"Kiss Me" by Sixpence none the richer.

A big-hit in my heyday.

This is "Turn of the Century" by Yes. The song is about a couple that loved each other very much, but the woman dies. To show his love for her, he molds a statue of her out of clay to remember her by. It might be a sad song, but it does reveal true love.

Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2, 2nd movement

Okay, wait a minute...this isn't a love song - there's no lyrics...but indirectly it is! Ladies and Gentlemen, I want to reveal a music thief - Eric Carmen!! He stole the progression and the melody from this piece when he wrote "All By Myself". So, in a way, this is a love song. I hope you enjoy some of the most beautiful 10 minutes ever written - well at least to post - romantic era fans.

(sorry, I just learned how to post a youtube video...bear with me)

And now that you have heard the Rachmaninoff piece, listen to this - thus it proves that Eric Carmen borrowed a little too much in my opinion, rendering himself a music thief.

Only just heard it. I don't know if it is supposed to be a love song. It's title makes it significant to me. And it makes sense in a way I wish it didn't.

That's one of my favorite songs.

I posted the original version of this a while ago. Here's Adam Sandler's version:

I've always wanted to make out to "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division.
It's one of my faves!

If you haven't seen the movie "Control" (It's about Joy Division's lead singer and his suicide) you should.
You'll never think of them in the same way again.
