I've lived in the USA my whole life and I've never heard of that. I had a friend who was on SSI for a psych DX. She got some free money (not enough to live on) and free insurance, but in exchange, she was required to take meds. She was also required to tell employers she was on it, and what her DX was. Even if she didn't, it would show up in a background check. I don't know if that would be worth it.

I was hooked up with them - voc rehab its called - but they couldnt really do anything for me because i seem to have too many limitations to work. for a while they did pay for free cabs for me, to look at apartments, but for only a couple weeks, and i didnt find a place to live anyway. there's nothing else they could do for me. it sucks. I need a caseworker. I need a life. I need someone to help me.

Orwell, just contact your local Dept. of Labor. Be warned, there's a long waiting list.

No, I don't think I could live with myself if I actually did something like that. There are people who genuinely need help, and I shouldn't take away from them. Anyways, that would make my laissez-faire Libertarianism a tad bit hypocritical.

Just a tad wee bit hypocritical, LOL Laughing Laughing Laughing !!

Seems to me that you'd have to pass a lot of ADA criteria to even qualify, and that could take years. The way I see it, it's better to get out there, go to school and work if you're able to do so and to stay off the teat of the U.S. Gov't as long as humanly possible. There's nothing more gratifying than being self-sufficient.

Well I hate to burst your bubble, but having Aspergers is the furtherest thing from winning the lottery. I don't care if they pay for you to have 10 years of college, it will not pay for all the trouble you'll have when you go into the work force and it will not help you focus more or get along with people any better. It will just delay the pain. That has been my experience.

I'm not jealous in any way, and let me tell you why: my friend Lisa recently recommended I talk to the state about business loans, since I have a "disability"( AS), and I flat-out turned the idea down, for two reasons:

1. I do NOT accept government assistance; I'm a laisse-faire capitalist, and am not a fan of government interference.

2. The whole point is to succeed DESPITE my Asperger Syndrome. And I can.

Tell me- imagine Stallone's character, Rocky, had AS...and he brought it into the movie. Imagine how differently his character would've been treated in the fight Vs Apollo Creed.

It would've been sad and pathetic.

Did Einstein say "I need assistance in winning the Nobel because I have a disability"? No he did not. He succeeded WITH it, and despite it.

By accepting the notion that getting these grants is a good thing, you're accepting somewhat of "victimhood". We may be outcasts, but that doesn't make us victims- sorry.

I live in North Carolina where they don't have such laws and try to get every penny out of it's residents. Sad. Also if I had a choice of winning 10 million dollars or getting rid of aspergers I'd choose getting rid of aspergers.

Ah, so many self-loathing AS'ers here, so little time. I'd take the ten mil, personally. My AS may be a curse, but it's more of a blessing in disguise...

blessing my ass, but i'll have to deal with it. Money can't buy happiness. I'd rather have a bunch of friends and be happy than to be rich and lonely any day of the week.

how do you know just because you have friends that you'd be happy? How do you know how good those friends would be? Just because NTs LOOK like they're always happy? Come now- I'd think you'd know better than that.

Ight let me break it down. If a had a bunch of friends therefore I wouldn't be lonely. Therefore I wouldn't be depressed cuz im lonely. Therefore my spirit would be up making me happy. If I had 10 million i don't know wtf I would do with it honestly. I don't go out that much. I'd still be lonely. You certainly can't buy friends, well not "real friends". Nor Love, so what's the point of taking the money instead of getting rid of aspergers. that's my opinon ya dig? Wink
