| I have Asprger's Syndrome, which in my eyes is a form of autism. I occasionally show some characteristics of Autism and 'NT' though. |

| I have High Functioning Autism (though sometimes I'll say I have Aspergers so I don't have to explain it every post), because I was severely Autistic for most of my childhood. With a lot of therapy and hard work, I'm very high functioning (I look like I have Aspergers), but my past makes it that I have High Functioning Autism. |

Applied Behaviour Analysis.
A technique that has been over-applied to autism, apparently. There is no evidence that it is any more effective than straightforward support. In fact, there is no evidence that it does much beyond severely stressing the individual it is applied to. Where there have been opportunities to compare the "results" from ABA with the results of not using it, there have been no significant differences.
Its main thesis is that changing undesirable behaviours is a "good idea" and it generally does only that - changes behaviour. It does not address any of the underlying reasons for the behaviour.
One proponent of the technique would be "The Judge Rotenberg Education Center", where they use electroshock of autistics to stop them doing anything they think isn't socially acceptable... e.g. stimming, and so on. _________________ Oregano, n: The ancient Italian art of pizza folding.

DXed ADDer with some AS traits such as unusual voice and gait(i am a toe-walker), motor issues, social difficulties, sensory issues, avoidance of eye contact, minor face blindness, obessions, emotional immaturity for age(basicly a 32 year old teeneager), and a few other things
I am of slightly above average intelligence..I am not mathematicly inclined...I do think in pictures...I do not have rigid routines....but have some OCD tendancies
I might be PDD-NOS...but not sure....Probly just an ADDer with some AS traits...anough to be addicted to this board anyhow.. |

| Strictly speaking, I was diagnosed with "autistic features" at around the age of three (1989) though I don't think it was autism outright. I guess PDD-NOS would be close enough. |

PDD NOS. Does that make me an Autie??
I tend to explain it as aspergers to the NT world because it's easier to say, than having to longhand explain what PDD NOS stands for and how it relates to autism.
mightyzebra, they were like that to me with my first dx too. Not only did I make it through high school I graduated top 10% (regular public high school with an IEP and supportive teachers and case manager) Shows how much the doctors know. |

I said elsewhere, that I feel the HFA/Asperger's thing to be a pretty arbitrary distinction. I regard myself as autistic, and by that I mean a member of the whole spectrum. However, although (to be specific, and informal) I would call myself an aspie, I wouldn't like to say I was an autie, because I think that is already well established for those specifically diagnosed with Autistic Disorder (a label I find demeaning, but that's what it is). _________________ Oregano, n: The ancient Italian art of pizza folding.

I am a aspie, and I would not want to be anything else ^_^. I was diagnosed in 1985 when I was 2 or 3. I did not talk until I was 3. _________________ Humans are intelligent, but that doesn't make them smart. |
