Here is the warning:
Then, Cyndi says if she’d known her 12-year-old son, Alex, had autism and down syndrome, she may not have brought him into the world. She says he hits himself, screams, grunts at the top of his lungs and wears two pairs of diapers at a time because he’s not potty trained. Her husband, Ulis, says he doesn’t find it difficult to care for Alex, but Cyndi says she’s exhausted and overwhelmed. Should the boy be institutionalized? Find out what Dr. Phil thinks. Plus, meet a mom with four kids who’s already left home twice. Now she’s scared she may leave again – this time for good. Talk about the show here.
I don't like that woman's attitude. I feel that everybody deserves to live, no matter what. Obviously that mother doesn't feel that way.

people have different capacities to parent, just like any other human ability. Unfortunately there is a lot of pressure on women to have children, but you don't find out if you are any good at it until after the deed is done.
I suggest it is better for the child to be cared for by someone who can do a good job than to have life ruined and also to ruin the life of someone who is not able to parent him. I hope she is able to find the courage to leave or that the family can afford live in child care so the boy can be nurtured. |

If Dr Phil is as good he's supposed to be then he'll realise that the family needs help and support. Looking after any kid is difficult and an autistic child doubly so.
It's quite possible/probable that this mother has post natal depression. It can continue (and worsen) for years after the birth. It's unlikely to go away without treatment and even then, it probably won't go away entirely.
The mother/child bond is probably severely damaged by this.

It's upsetting to hear that kind of thing, but I don't think any mother would say that if they weren't at their wits end. Yes, it may not be anyone's fault, but low-functioning autism can be extremely difficult and stressful to deal with on a day-to-day basis, especially for the parents. It's a full time job and doesn't just end when the child 'grows up', it could well for their entire life. When you add to that societal pressure to be the perfect mother and perfect parent and deal with whatever difficulties life (or your child) throws at you, it can make things almost unbearable. The poor woman clearly needs a hand dealing with her son and I really hope she gets it, not just for her sake but for the kid's sake too. That kind of relationship, no matter how well she deals with it and how much good she tries to do, just isn't healthy for either of them. There's nothing wrong with asking for help and I totally understand people needing it in that kind of a situation, it's just a shame how little there often is available, or that people simply don't know where to go to get it.

Doctor phil is a mean ass muthatrucka he says it as it is,he doesnt care about the reaction,
but that is what makes him brilliant,he is not patronising or false,I take my hat off too him.

"Doctor" Phil is a poser, whose understanding of human psychology is minuscule at best. He's not "mean-ass" - he's mean-hearted.
As it happens, I wouldn't be watching his program in any event, so this poses no problem for me, other than concern for this poor kid after Phil gives whatever pulled-out-of-his-ass advice he's going to pop off.

I share the sentiment with you CockneyRebel. When I was pregnant with my children, they asked if I wanted the AFP test to check for birth defects. I refused. What was the point? if I found out they weren't perfect, would I have aborted them? No! Both of them are autistic (my son has PDD-NOS and my daughter has been diagnosed with autism) and though there are definitely challenges and tiring moments I would never abandon my kids or wish they'd never been born. I don't feel sorry for that mother, I feel sorry for the child.

I don't like "Dr." Phil. He's a terrible doctor. Every psychology professor and psychiatrist i've ever known have said that he's a quack.

That's my life in a nutshell, and my opinion on the matter, as well.
If I had the resources I'd adopt those kids myself. I'd appreciate them, and love them, unlike their parents who obviously don't want them. |
