Ok, i have read a few blogs lately, and when people talk about Autism, they often talk about Mercury.
I surfed a bit around, and i mean, the arguments seem good. But i have also seen people claim Mercury is GOOD for you.
Its a jungle out there. I saw an article here on WP which states that the whole Mercury thing is a myth.
So whats the deal? Have anyone experience with the whole Mercury thing? I have seen videos with parents who's infatile autistic kids become normal from a detox course. But sounds too good to be true. |

Mercury is toxic. It kills, it does not cause disorders. _________________ "They do, but what do you think is on the radio? Meat sounds. You know how when you slap or flap meat, it makes a noise? its the planet closest to the sun, has a year of about 88 days. It is the smallest planet in our solar system, no moons, rocky and has lots of craters. Mercury has very little athmosphere to speak of, very little magnetic feild and is the most eccentric of the planets. _________________ DX'ed with HFA as a child. However this was in 1987 and I am certain had I been DX'ed a few years later I would have been DX'ed with AS instead. |

No, Woodsman, we're talking about the element Mergury, or atomic symbol Hg.
My math teacher got really angry at me for saying that mercury ≠ autism. I didn't know she was so opinionated, seeing as her only son has nothing ASD-related at all. |

I don't know, but the questions to consider are:
1. How much mercury do you have to absorb in one dose to begin seeing toxic effects?
2. What level of constant absorption is required to begin seeing toxic effects?
3. How much mercury is absorbed from vaccines, fillings, etc?
Yes mercury is toxic, but a spoiled vaccine might be ineffective or even dangerous. I'm guessing the amount of mercury absorbed in 3. is much less than the answer you'll get in 1. or 2. |

| The symptoms of mercury poisoning more closely resemble advanced Parkinson's disease. The idea that mercury can cause a genetic brain disposition is ridiculous. I'm 48 and I've never been exposed to mercury in my life, outside of a high school science classroom and I wasn't allowed to touch it then. |

I have a question, have you had silver amalgam fillings in your teeth? |

However, the question "What's the deal with Mercury?" still applies. What's up with the cliffs? And why do they run north-south?
There was once a suggested linkage between thimerosal (a mercury-based preservative used in vaccines) and autism. However, in 1998, the author of that article retracted his suggestion, when no mechanism for the linkage could be found. In 1999, the Netherlands removed thimerosal from all vaccines; in 2001, California followed suit. There has been no change in the rate of autism diagnoses in either place, where, if the thimerosal idea were correct, one would have expected a rather drastic drop (especially since even if you can find a dentist still using a mercury-containing amalgam, I daresay you'll still find vanishingly few two-year-olds with fillings). There have also been widespread epidemiological studies conducted by the CDC, the Canadian government, the Danish government, and the World Health Organization; all have failed to find any links between thimerosal and autism. Instead, these studies have confirmed that autism is linked to a basic neurological difference - not organic damage, just a different way that the brain grew. The mirror neurons don't seem to work very well; there are substantial variations from the norm in the amygdala, hippocampus, and parietal lobes; and the bridge of Willis, between the two halves of the cerebrum, appears unusually thin in many cases.
The basic concept behind the thimerosal panic occurred when someone noticed that the symptoms of autism were most apparent around the age of two (if one were willing to deny that there's anything "wrong" with their baby, as most people are, it could be thought of as the "onset"), and in the US at least, the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is generally given at about that age as well. The logical fallacy of post hoc ergo propter hoc ("it occurs after, therefore it is caused by") kicks in, and people begin to blame the vaccine.
Back in medieval times, there were no vaccines. Then, people blamed the elves, for stealing their real child and leaving them with this grumpy, uncommunicative, too-curious changeling. There has been one step forward - at least in the modern era, no one suggests that you should leave your autistic child alone in the woods so that the thimerosal will bring your real baby back... _________________ One man's "magic" is another man's engineering. The mercury-in-the-vaccines theory was blown away, not only by the many studies that find no link, but also by time. Thimerosal (mercury) was removed from most childhood vaccines in the US (except for the flu vaccine) by 2003. The reported rates of autism since then have gone way up, not down. No one but a few staunch and true believers still agrees with the thimerosal theory.
Now, the cause-du-jour seems to be "environmental insult," or the vaccines themselves (to those few who look for a man made "cause.") The thimerosal theory has fallen out of favor, for the most part. |

There are probably a hundred reasons why ethyl mercury (the mercury found in thimerosal and dental amalgams) is blamed:
1. Symptoms of chronic ethyl mercury poisoning are similar to autism
2. Studies have found high levels of mercury in autistics
3. Studies have found autistics have reduced ability to get rid of mercury
4. First cases of autism were diagnosed on two separate continents around the same time in two different parts of the world, shortly after thimerosal contaning vaccines and ethyl mercury containing fungicides were introduced
5. Kanner and Asperger, the first to identify autism, found that many of the parents of the children they diagnosed worked with ethyl mercury
6. A randomized, double-blind, controlled study found chelation was effective at treating autism which confirms the hundreds of anecdotal reports of parents who claim chelation helps their children
7. Autism and autoimmune disorders (now linked to autism) are practically non-existant in the unvaccinated Amish
8. There are multitudes of scientific studies that have already found links between thimerosal, ethyl mercury, and autism
9. The CDC's own study found a correlation between thimerosal and autism. The results were discussed in secret, when someone found out they claimed they lost the study, and to avoid anyone analyzing the data with a Freedom of Information Act request, they gave it the an HMO exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests so no one could analyze the data.
10. A Freedom of Information Act request revealed that the CDC told the Institute of Medicine to study thimerosal and autism and to conclude there was no link before they even started the study. Therefore, the conclusions are invalid because they were deliberately flawed.
11. There's a good article called Tobacco science and the thimerosal scandal, a 66 page report, with 179 documented references, of links between thimerosal and autism.
12. A CDC study in 2000 showed that the rate of autism goes up as exposure to thimerosal increases. Children who received > 62.5mcg ethyl mercury from vaccines by 3 months of age were twice as likely to be diagnosed with autism.
13. Studies that didn't find links have been shown to have serious problems such as ties to vaccine manufacturers, poor study design, small sample sizes, and conclusions not related to the study
14. Most importantly, IT'S NOT JUST AUTISM! Thimerosal is linked to several neurological disorders. Mercury is one of the most toxic chemicals known to man and doesn't belong in anyone. No one should be exposed to man-made ethyl mercury from thimerosal or dental amalgam fillings. Autism is just one of many linked to it. For example, in 1977, a study by Dr. N.D. Mukhtarova found that the majority of adults who were exposed to much lower concentrations of ethyl mercury than those given to American children in vaccines were still suffering neurological injury and neuropathology several years after the exposure. That was in 1977. American children were exposed to even higher levels of ethyl mercury from vaccines in the 1990s.

It's all very confusing. Some studies have found a link, others do not. In reality I think it's possible that mercury might amplify the symptoms of Autism, but it won't cause it. After all it doesn't explain symptoms appearing before the child is vaccinated. _________________ Good always prevails. Sometimes it just takes a little longer then you may wish. |
