Hi everyone,
I am a 33 year old in Oklahoma that just learned of Asperger's on Monday of this week. I googled Asperger's and found this site and here I am. I don't know if I have Asperger's or not (I have strong suspicions I do). Without boring everyone with my life story, here are a few things about me:
-Stuttered since childhood
-Very few friends growing up
-Enjoy very much my time alone, even as a kid (preferred to be alone most of the time)
-Chew on fingernails
-Very picky eater, always eat the same foods
-Felt like an outcast in big groups, when I heard laughter I always thought it was about me
-Terrified of speaking in front of groups
-HATE Clutter at home or at work
-Can't stand loud noises (TV's too loud, baby crying, etc.)
-Afraid to initiate conversations, even with people I know (don't know what to say)
-Tendency to get angry quickly with co workers and family (especially in my alone time-don't like to be interrupted)
-I don't initiate change or react well to it (I need warnings and time to cope)
I should also point out I have been married for 11 years and have 2 kids, ages 9 and 5. I graduated from college and have a fairly good job. However, I have always felt "alone" since childhood. I seem to have "friends" who drop off the face of the earth (although I don't put much effort either to stay in touch). The only places I go are work and to my kids activities. If I didn't have my family, I wonder what life would be like and how lonely I would get. It's like I know I should have friends but really don't care!! I value my alone time. I enjoy learning about history on the internet and the History channel. I am a child of the 80's and like to watch 80's movies and listen to 80's music. I'm rambling now, just wanted to say Hi. I'd like to learn as much as possible about AS. It's kind of a relief on the surface to know that MAYBE something can explain my behavior and I'm not just "weird". |

Welcome Flux! This sounds like your place.
I totally here ya, there is nothing so oppressive as only being able to define yourself as "weird." But, you are among friends here. Enjoy! |

Thanks for providing that link for the test..I scored a 138, which indicates I have Asperger's like I thought..Thanks Brittany
I wonder if I should go for a formal diagnosis now. What does everyone recommend? There seems to be a lot of information online about AS. My wife thinks I should take "social skills" classes. Does anyone go to these, if they exist?? |
