Tonight was a perfect example as to why I'm glad I'm not "normal".
I tend to wear very brightly colored clothing because bright colors make me happy. My hair is also rather pink.
I took the kiddos to the store and some guy on the way out said "Wow, I like those pants!" (they are lime green), and I just kind of looked at him, then nervously said thanks. Then he continued "wow, those are really bright, so is your hair..." and as he was walking away, when he was farther in the distance, he yelled out "by the way, Halloween is over!" to which all of his friends, of course, bursted out laughing.
Okay, maybe I should have been offended, I don't know. I found it rude, but at the same time, I just laughed and shook my head towards the ground. I couldn't help but think that was the least creative insult I've ever heard in my life (considering you see it on almost every kid show anymore when anyone different comes into the picture), and I couldn't help but laugh at the stupidity of it. I cannot figure out why he didn't just say that from the start, then I got to thinking...
Is this what the majority of NTs are like? Granted, most of them probably wouldn't actually say something like that to another person, because they would be afraid it would make them look bad or something, but do they always instantly find a need to judge others?
About half an hour after the incident (yes, it took it that long to register, lol), I wanted to rewind the clock and say something back such as "oh, yes, halloween IS over... but I see that the time for close-minded people is just right..." But by then, it just wasn't worth it anyway. Considering the insult he chose from the start was something so incredibly common to hear from all kinds of things now, I figured it would probably go right over his head.
But I do wonder how many people on a regular basis DO judge others just on appearance, or feel a need to say something about another's appearance? I don't really understand what the point of it is, or why it is seen as funny to others really... I mean, I'm the one wearing the clothes, not them... and if they don't like it, then they don't have to dress like me, lol. It just doesn't make sense... _________________ Sorry for the long post...

Thats pretty funny nobodyzdream...I used to hear the same thing 20 years ago(maybe from this guys father)? I think Dead Kennidys have a song that "everyday is Halloween"....Anyway,yeah,people are weird. Half the reason people conform is because they are so scared someone might say something to try and shame them...but you can't shame someone who likes themselves...oh,that really pisses people off. I used to be pretty fast at "comebacks" so people learned to shut up around me as I could generally find something that they felt vulnerable about to comment on...it was kind of a game for me...I cracked myself up,lol.
If someone says something like that to me...I could give them a snide superior look and say..."Yeah, like I'm going to take fashion advice from someone who dresses like you?"then sort of snicker and shake my head and move on...that actually got their friends to laugh at them....maybe just because some freak had the nerve to talk back to them?...it doesn't matter how they dress...these people are vulnerable to others opinions and they will begin questioning themselves.Maybe it achieves nothing and maybe it will get them to think twice about opening their mouths. _________________ Just because one plane is flying out of formation, doesnt mean the formation is on course....R.D.Lang

I thought one left this drivel behind in high school.
People are judging you on how you appear every time they look at you, it's a "normal" thing to do. I don't understand it personally, but then, I'm the "abnormal" one.
It's a social thing. |

Ya know, it's funny, I thought the same thing... but the guy seemed older than me (though, I'm not exactly great at figuring that out).
I guess I just keep to myself so much that I forget that these kinds of things happen out in the "real world" until they do... then I start thinking about it, lol.
I'm very glad that I'm not like them, because I cannot imagine how much energy that must take to focus on other people so much, lol... It seems they must be on the look out for those who are different, just to state the obvious to everyone around, including the person they are insulting. It's just goofy. I think it would be exhausting, and after a while, maybe depressing to an extent... I wonder what they do when they have no one else to compare themselves to in order to make themselves feel better...
I suppose I am frustrated to an extent, as my son is picked on a lot in school... So it was kind of weird to be being bullied as an adult, by an adult, in front of my kiddo. Though it does explain better why there are so many mean kids. _________________ Sorry for the long post...

Luckily I don't really judge people by their looks. I go by personalities.
People have made comments or jokes about what I wear but I never got what they were saying. _________________ Aspergers, PDD-NOS, autistic, who cares what diagnoses I have, it's just a label. All on the spectrum. |

I'm much the same way. One can never tell by how another looks... but then again, I can't even describe how people look, lol. If someone asks if someone else is good looking, I never know... everyone just kind of looks like people to me, lol. _________________ Sorry for the long post...

I was told ALL THROUGH SCHOOL that bullies would grow out of it(like that would make ANY difference)! They DON'T!!!!! There are three kinds of bullies:
1. OVERT
2. COVERT
3. LONERS looking for attention.
There are generally 2 things that change. The overt may become covert due to the fact that being discovered could cause them to be unemployed or end up in jail. SURPRISINGLY, some of the loners may ACTUALLY "grow out of it"! They may even try to be your friends! Still, you have to watch it, because adults have more, and more heinous ways, of being covert bullies. A few make the news and, EVEN THEN, they seem to be accepted as even GENEROUS! YEAH RIGHT! |

People are really really preoccupied with other people. That's what I observe. Whether this observation is correct or not, I do not know.
I wish I could say more than that, come up with an awesome explanation... but I just haven't the foggiest. I have no idea what other people think about someone if they see them. Or if they think about a familiar person.
I seem to think about entirely different things. That much I know. I mean, I don't even think about names.
I know others do. They always know someone's name. And if they consider a name a crucial piece of information, then I assume they consider a lot more things relevant. I think clothing is a big deal for them.
On the other hand, when I say 'this girl with brown hair and blue trousers', they have no idea who I am talking about. How can they go on and be nasty about someone's clothing if they don't notice? When do they notice?
NTs seem to perceive people so differently, it's awing. I wish I could get to know both NT and autistic perception! |
