I am new to Ubuntu linux and I only just downloaded it and burnt it. When I got to the boot up screen I selected the option to "run or install ubuntu". After doing that I waited about 2 minutes or so and this orange screen comes up and asks me for a username and password... The only problem is that I haven't set a username or a password yet. Can somebody tell me what is wrong? I am confused.

try typing "USERNAME" in both the username and password windows, without the "quotation marks"

That's odd, what version is it? I've used many versions of Ubuntu, my workstation always has the newest version on it. I have never seen it ask for a username or password when you boot from the live cd. Are you sure you didnt download the alternate cd by accident?

I'm 100% positive. I downloaded via bitorrent rather than download it directly from a server though. I'm trying the new beta of Ubuntu and I'll see if I have any luck.

You may have found someones mod through the torrent. Try looking for any kind of readme that came with it, if the OS has been modded to need a username and password, then you ought find it there.

Personally, I would NOT use this version to install. Sounds a bit fishy, and I hate people getting on my comp even when I know them. Just download the version from Ubuntu's site, it honestly doesn't take that long, and you'll know its clean.

Ok, I've got a screenshot here for you guys.

1. Is this the screen that I should be at to connect my DSL connection?
2. I typed in my network details (My ISP username and password and it tried connecting but I got this message saying that I needed encryption or some sort of key.

That looks like a wireless protocol. you want a wireless, or do you have a lan cable?

Looks like its not actually installed, as the install icon is still on the desk top, do you have the computer hooked up to a router, is the router wired or wireless, does the dsl modem use any sort of software to work in windows, is it a usb type dsl modem?

You have to install the system before you can set a username or password for it.

Do you see the icon that says install? Click on that and follow the steps and eventually you will get to set a username/password. Until you do you are just running it from the cd and you can't install new software to it and it will run slower.

My DSL connection doesn't use a router, it doesn't need software to work in windows and it isn't a USB type modem.

Okay, I don't know Ubuntu well, but I know that there are tools to config PPPoE (which is the program/protocol for most things DSL). The dialog you showed appeared very wrong to me.

Of course it is/should be possible to go online with a live system.

EDIT: FEAR MY 1337 GOOGLE SKILLZ!!! https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/internet/C/modems-adsl-pppoe.html
