Well the intention for the vocals is to convey melody and verbal language. It adds a new dimension to a group.
Without a vocalist many bands would be dreadful live, and you'd pick-up how monotonous most songs actually are.
If the lyrics are saturated with metaphors and irony then that will add another more complex side to the group.
I've noticed most groups with clever lyrics are not well recieved in America...

I pick up some lyrics fairly quicklu. It depends how clearly the vocalist enunciates. I actually pick up foreign language lyrics well. I have no idea why. Sometimes I can remember them better than English lyrics. Of course the thing about music is that when I'm listening to music with lyrics that's all I can be doing. I can listen to classical or any other non-vocal music when typing though. So my full focus is on the music most of the time. I make sure to not have any background noise because for one thing it ruins perfectly good music and for another I can't understand a bit of the lyrics if someone is being noisy.
