Hello,
I've posted about the dramas we've been having at school this year and I put in a complaint to the Principal.
An additional part-time Special Ed teacher starts in 2 weeks. While waiting for her to start, the following has been put in place:
- My 9 year old gets 30 minutes of project time every day. He sits in the Vice Principal's office doing his work on the spare computer. The teacher, Principal and Vice Principal have been amazed and astounded by the volume and quality of work he has been producing. I haven't - I alread know how bright and hard-working he is.
- My 8 year old has had additional teacher aide time allocated to him. I withdrew him from school 2 weeks ago for 1 week. The teacher, Principal and Vice Principal have been amazed and astounded by his schoolwork this week. I haven't - I know how bright and creative he is when given the right conditions in which to work.
- The idiot Special Ed teacher has been undergoing intensive 'counselling and education' by the Principal. The Principal wants to set up a meeting between the 3 of us. I have agreed to do this in a few weeks time when the boys have settled down. I still can't face meeting her. I know I'd be rude and angry. I want to be calm and logical so I can (hopefully) help her to learn.
We have an IEP meeting on 22nd April with the new Special Ed teacher, Principal, Vice Principal, classroom teachers, boys' psychologist and me.

I"m so glad things are better and the school's finally getting their act together. yay!
MY 5 y/o FINALLY has an IEP mtg scheduled for the end of this month, just one month before the school year ends
We're insisting he repeat Kindergarden with the correct services in place and the school's not to happy about it. LOL! They are overcrowded for K and are pushing to move him ahead. I know it would be beneficial for him to repeat, so I'm sticking to my guns on this. |

Well done Helen.
Our school had an open day today where parents could visit the classrooms. My wife took our youngest son (due to start next year) with her and showed him the kindergarten classrooms - even though his brother is in Year 2.
My youngest has HFA, so my wife felt that the more exposure he got to the classrooms, the better he'll be when he starts.
She was greeted with a fair amount of anger from one kindergarten teacher and felt so uncomfortable that she had to leave.
We've decided which teacher he ISN'T going to be having next year. _________________ Gavin.

She was annoyed because my wife was in the room with our other child but we don't have a child in her class. _________________ Gavin.

| Good luck at the meeting. I am thinking of getting a shirt to wear under my outer shirt to iep meetings that I can open and flash when they start discussing behavior. It will say "It's the AUTISM, STUPID!!!" |

great news Helen, I am so glad that things seem to be working out. Let us know how the upcoming meetings go. You are so lucky to have such a supportive principal and vice principal. Also, I love the T-shirt!! _________________ NT mom of two ASD boys
