Does changing the logo to include autism help to create awareness or inclusion within the WP community?
Thoughts.

I like that it includes those that do not have Asperger's Syndrome.
I don't like that it intimates that AS is a different animal than autism. _________________ "Maybe the ones who have it easy are missing part of the adventure."

I guess I'd rather it said "autistic spectrum people".
It's lop-sided, the way the word "autism" is overused, both as the word for "Kanner's syndrome" (termed "early infantile autism" by Leo Kanner), and which seems to have vanished, and so on, plus it is also used for the whole spectrum, which then draws in PDD-NOS.
Plus Hans Asperger called his diagnosis "autistic psychopathy". _________________ quark, n. The sound made by a well bred duck. |

All professionals I've conversed with see "autism" as autistic disorder (also known as early infantile autism, childhood autism, or Kanner's autism). Asperger's is called just that by them.
I like the title change, and adding PDD-NOS is superfluous as such is "atypical" autism/Asperger's for the most part; same disorders, just less symptoms.
Many clinical sites call autistic disorder "autism"; MedlinePlus, eMedicine and NINDS for example.
Autism and Asperger's are the two most known labels.... Members here have both. |

Ah... but estimated prevalence figures, as of 2006, according to the NAS, here, per 10,000:
38.9 childhood autism (Kanner['s])
77.2 other ASDs
===
116.1 total
Elsewhere, they also cite some older studies yielding...
20 IQ<70 All ASDs
36 IQ>70 Asperger['s] syndrome
35 IQ>70 Other ASD(ASC)
==
91 total
Generally, they tend to give the current estimate as one in 100.
The above tends to suggest that PDD-NOS constitutes at least a third of the ASD population.
Elsewhere, I read a much higher estimate for PDD-NOS, but I forget where. Sorry. _________________ quark, n. The sound made by a well bred duck. |

Politics of inclusion topic
I just noticed the change, after I read the comments. I have a hunch this is not a permanent change and there will be a vote on the issue. I suspect the logo was changed due to Autism Awareness Month and so Internet surfers would see the term Autism, which is arguably a more commonly recognized term. Lau's term suggestion merits a second look.
Change is good if the ideas become clearer and more refined. _________________ Radical Aspergian

So, why not "The online resource and community for those on the autism spectrum" or something like that?
That way everyone gets included and we're not nitpicking that "PDD-NOS got left out" or "well, Asperger's is autism too" or anything like that. I vote for whatever is most inclusive but doesn't exclude other names (AS, PDD-NOS) from being considered forms of autism. _________________ "Maybe the ones who have it easy are missing part of the adventure."

According to Wikipedia, PDD-NOS is the most common, followed by "classic" autism, then Asperger's.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_spectrum_disorders
One review estimated a prevalence of at least 1.3 per 1,000 for autism and 6.0–6.5 per 1,000 for ASD; PDD-NOS was the vast majority of ASD, Asperger's was about 0.3 per 1,000 and the atypical forms childhood disintegrative disorder and Rett syndrome were much rarer.[6]
But that of course is dependent on your definition of PDD-NOS and Asperger's, which I have complained about already in many a thread.
I agree with the others that simply "autism spectrum" might be the most all-inclusive way of putting it. |

like it a lot,it is more inclusive and better for awareness of autism,as an aspie only logo it gives users the idea that everyone on here is aspie,and auties [whether classic or atpical] get left out regulary,not only that,it's used to ignore auties that have come from WP on....the other autism forum because some users believe auties cannot do anything online and use anything to help spread their ignorance.
it also did not help the stupid and outdated stereotype [both on WP and...the other one] that auties,especially LFAs,cannot use text or forums.
by showing it's for autism as well as AS,it will get more autie members,more inclusive topics,and hopefully it will get rid of that ignorant judgement users of....other forum have [eg,auties cannot use forums or communicate in text].
and seconded what Danielismyname said. _________________ [LFAutie]
