I think you're really a goth when you stop claiming to be a goth even though you're obviously dressed like one, and when people aks you if you're a goth you say, "No f***ing way man! I'm just my dark, depressing, morbid self!"
But honestly, all those clothes, music, World of Darkness role-playing games, vampire movies, Queen Victoria wearing her funeral garments permamently after her husband's death and all of Europe following the trend, its all awesome and gets a thumbs up in my book. |

| I actually count rivetheads as a subgroup of goths, because the subcultures overlap so much. But seeing as I'm only a little bit of a rivethead I could be totally off...heheh. |

Back when I was around 13-16,I dressed "goth" and--to a certain extent--I considered myself one. D@MN,was I EVER naive.
I've realized now that I don't need a label to describe me. In fact,NO ONE should use labels to describe themselves OR other people. We're all too unique and complicated to need one.
To me"GOTH" is just another pointless high school label. I can remember being on a goth forum and having people say extremely rude things to me and bitch all the time about how much they hated "preps" and "emos".

I honestly think that once you say "I'm ____", you're no longer that thing.
That said, I'm sure a lot of people would call me goth. Amid my music collection is a lot of classic gothic stuff like Siouxsie, Bauhaus, Christian Death, Alien Sex Fiend, etc... mostly in huge multi-disc compilations.
I don't dress like a Hot Topic threw up on me, but I am generally always in all black. Hell, my favorite RPGs are the World of Darkness stuff(Vampire, Werewolf, Changeling, etc).
Oh well. |

Me too! I don't even know how that happens. I'm kind of geeky, too. Most of the hippiness comes in my parenting styles and most of the gothiness comes in for my appreciation for things that can be beautiful but also sad and/or slightly gory. I'd be more likely to wear hippieish clothing than Gothic clothing because hippie clothing looks cooler to me, and also because it's a lot less weirder to see a parent of a 4 month old baby walking around with their little one wearing hippie clothes than wearing all black with piercings and chains, etc.
FWIW, I don't walk around saying "I'm a hippie" to people or even really think about it. I just do what I do. Lots of people would consider that to be hippieish, like when I carry my little guy around in a carrier instead of in a stroller, and I think that skirts and shirts that are sometimes classified as hippie clothes are really pretty. I don't always wear that stuff and I don't really try to classify myself. I also hold a lot of views on politics, life, and drug usage (I don't do MJ but I don't see it as harmful) as people who were in the original hippie movement. When I go around saying that I'm a hippie, though, or slap on any other label, It makes me feel like I have to classify in every way with that certain group of people and discourages me from being myself. |

I am more emotional than I am gothic.
I do respect the art. 16th-17th century architecture is some of the most amazing stuff. Sheer brilliance. _________________ No one grows by sitting at home; so get up, get out, and get a life. |

| I like Gothic stuff and the subculture interests me. I'm a huge fan of Gothic Lolita clothing. I used to wear a lot more gothic clothes than I do now, I just wear whatever I like. My friends say that I'm "artsy" rather than gothic, though probably their views of gothic is stereotyped. |

Probably TOO stereotyped. By the way, I really like your avatar. She's beautiful! _________________ Joshua

IMO goth isn't a label as much as a subculture. Anybody who tries to be gothier-than-thou or is afraid to like things that aren't gothic, however, ARE treating it as a label and that is a bad thing. However, it's very possible to identify with the subculture while still being an INDIVIDUAL and not pretending to like the things that you don't like.
That said, there are a lot of goths who are assholes and idiots and DO treat it as a label. But there are horrible elitists in any subculture: it's unavoidable.

You can't declare that somebody is outside of a subculture just because you don't like them, that's like censoring certain content. You have to allow that every group has it's idiots otherwise you're just putting up vague proclamations about what is and what isn't considered Goth/Punk/Hip Hop or whatever and eventually it becomes diluteted because nobody has a clue what it's about, or how to be a part of it and in the end you get this bull**** about agreeing to disagree when deciding who's in and isn't. And yet it's so simple, just look at the deffinition of "Sub culture" then get an idea of what is common in the sub culture who sticks to those rules and who associates regularly with that kind of person as a part of the local scene. Of course you have to allow for regional differences. I didn't really put a lot of thought into that but you get the general idea. _________________ "They do, but what do you think is on the radio? I have quite a few goth friends, they're my favourite people to be with. I love industrial and EBM, general goth stuff.
However, they wouldn't class me as goth, though. You could call me a goth admirerer or layman, I was nevera card-carrying goth in my youth (I regret that), though once again I had friends who were.
At 36 I'm at the age where the goths I meet have been goth for years, and it's impossible for me to get more goth without looking like some bandwagon-jumper. It's a shame as I really love the music, the clothes, the ideas.
Okay so it's all apropos of nothing really, but there you go. |
