Ive become extremely superstitious lately about prime numbers, and odd numbers in general. For some reason I
always try to maintain an even number of messages in my e-mail inbox and even here on WP I try to always have an ever number of messages. I see odd numbers, ESPECIALLY prime numbers as being bad luck. Anyone else have strange numerology hang-ups like this?

I think you're taking this way too serious.

I don't know, but mine has always been in 3s of everything. I'm not that superstitious but it still gives me that feeling.

Polynomials involve prime numbers heavily. I was implying that you'd better be very wary about them, before you attacked me with the twat comment.

I like 2s, 3s, 6s, 8s and 0s.

I'm neutral about 1s, 4s, 5s and 9s.

I don't like 7s, except in years (the 70s, 1987, 1997...)

I totally agree. Prime numbers and numerology is the topic at hand and not buggery.

Just do all of your work in an algebraic extension of the integers Smile Then a lot of numbers stop being prime.

*sorry, inner math geek coming out*

obligatory explanation: suppose you take the integers and toss in, say, sqrt(5). Then 5 is no longer prime, since 5 = sqrt(5)*sqrt(5), and it turns out that a whole lot of other numbers stop being prime as well, like 11 = (4 + sqrt(5))*(4 - sqrt(5)). Turns out that depending on which square root you toss in, different primes "stay" prime and others can be factored.

now return to your regularly scheduled thread Shocked
