*sorry, inner math geek coming out*
obligatory explanation: suppose you take the integers and toss in, say, sqrt(5). Then 5 is no longer prime, since 5 = sqrt(5)*sqrt(5), and it turns out that a whole lot of other numbers stop being prime as well, like 11 = (4 + sqrt(5))*(4 - sqrt(5)). Turns out that depending on which square root you toss in, different primes "stay" prime and others can be factored.
now return to your regularly scheduled thread |
This is some good stuff. _________________ Warghh!!!!!!!!!!! |

| Thats true Wolphin, But when it comes to things like e-mail messages-how do you define Sqrt(5) messages? Or ANY non-integer quantity of such?? |

I believe that this thread is supposed to be about prime numbers..
My favourites are 9, 99 and 999. _________________ Mick Avory is my favourite Kink. He always has been and he always will be. Him and I are two peas in a pod. |

You do realize those numbers are NOT prime though CockneyRebel |

That's the beauty, how often do you come across sqrt(5) in daily life? You can't possibly have a email message with sqrt(5) characters in it.
That way, you don't have to deal with primes as much |

| Ugh, I know exactly how you feel. I've always felt uncomfortable about prime/odd numbers. For example, my imaginary world has to have an even number of characters organized into pairs. That's the way it's always been. I've tried changing it up a bit (having odd numbers of characters, not putting them in pairs...) but it just doesn't fly with me. |
