Have any of you watched "Beauty and the geek" show? I completely identify with one of its characters: Joe. To me, he seems to be very much like an aspie, or at least he reminds me of myself a lot. Even though nobody liked him, he never was trully mean to anyone. He was just living in his own world, and from time to time used others to let out his anxiety. This reminds me of a 2 year old who uses adults to release anxiety. 2 year olds are not mean, they don't even know what that is. They are just lost, frustrated, and don't know how to deal with the world.

What makes me especially feel sorry for him is that I am almost positive he finally realized how much damage he had been making through his negative behavior, and sincerely wanted to change. He just didn't know how so he tried to withdraw to, at least, not make things worse. Yet others continued to make him more and more uncomfortable, as if he was the same as at the beginning of the show, which he wasn't.

As he faced more and more frustration, came a day which was one of the worst. He was continuously attached throughout the whole day. He tried not to respond to attacks and ignore them, yet more attacks came his way. He tried very hard to keep cool but eventually he reached a breaking point and just spit at someone totally random. He had no fights or disagreements with that particular girl that he spat on. She was just an outlet for him to let out his frustration.

He spat, and then immediately realized he shouldn't have done it and tried to exit the situation. But no way she were to let him exit. She continued to attack him and yell at him. Again he didn't fight back, hoping that she would cool down. But no way, she just started going around and telling more and more people about what he just done. Never mind the fact that he finally just went to his own room, locked the door and was nearly crying. It didn't matter that HE was no longer around, she had to continue to talk to EVERYONE about him.

What is especially bad is that despite all that, Joe was hated a lot more than the girl he spat on. Even though Joe never did anything maliciously, he simply reached a breaking point and couldnøt control himself for a second; that girl, on the other hadn, WAS most definitely malicious. She never lost control nor did she reach any breaking point. She knew exactly what she was doing and she felt it neceserly to have to hurt him back.

At the end, there was finally justice: on the next elimination it was him against that girl in elimination room (nice coincidence) and he won: Joe stayed while the girl left. But the bad thing is that he stayed NOT because he was liked more, but because he answered quiz questions better. The fact is that if it was up to people, they would rather get rid of Joe than of this girl. Joe was the first one sent to elimination room since EVERYONE wanted him out; on the other hand the girl was just there because they needed to select a "second person"

MORAL OF THE STORY: in NT world people dont give you any breaks on the basis that you are innocent or just less adopted. They turn it around and say that someone malicious like that girl is not THAT bad because at least she has enough self awareness to "fit in" while that guy is ostracised. Never mind the fact that people who "fit in" are often more malicious of the two since, after all, you need to fit in in order to pick sides.

Moral of the story..."Don't spit on people, as it is an attack regaurdless of your reasoning or lack of one, and they will probably feel a need to seek retaliation"

Spitting on someone, esp. a female, is totally unacceptable. I would not make excuses for Joe just because he's an Aspie. I would not give him special treatment. "Social awkwardness" is no excuse for bad behaviour. Am I being too tough on Joe? I think we should all be tougher on ourselves and be held to a higher standard. When out in the world, I expect to be held accountable for my actions like any NT.

No double standards!

I haven't seen this show (don't have a TV) but someone just posted on Cerebrals forum (www.cerebrals.com/board) on this subject and it made me really mad and frustrated: why is it that the girl is always the decoration? Hello? It is possible to be both female and geek, and even female, beautiful, and geek. Grrr. Excuse me while I go off and grind my teeth for a while.

Ok, go back to discussing Joe.

You act like there's no excuse for the girl getting angry about that, and that she was the one who did something wrong instead of him. If I was spat on, I'd spit right back. She didn't, but she at least had the right to be appalled and angry. NTs shouldn't have to have angelic standards and reactions, especially when someone spits on them. That's dirty. I'd be less angry if someone punched me. You also seem sure that her rage wasn't genuine, and her response calculated, but how would you have felt if someone did that to you?

I'm not sure if i'm thinking of the same situation, but is Joe that guy who writes cards?
If so, I think I know that situation that you were talking about. Was that the time when he called a girl unintellegent and she flipped out?

If so, I don't really see any excuse for that. Aspie or not, people should know that calling someone unintellegent is bound to offend them. It's a clear-cut insult.

I watched the show, an ep or 2.

It's a show, he's likely not such a dick in real life.
