Scholarships for family members to attend conferences to help better the life of a loved one with ASD.

Did anyone else notice how the above doesn't mention Aspies, i.e. for individuals with AS and/or their families?

Should be written (possibly);
Scholarships for individuals with AS and/or their families to attend conferences to help better live with AS

I haven't posted here before, is it ok to hop in on a topic?

The part that really sickens me is that the "cure" that Autism Speaks is promoting is the prenatal testing that they're working on in collaboration with the Autistic Genetic Research Exchange (collaborating by funneling money into). The idea is that once it's been shown that an unborn fetus may have Autism, the mother can abort the pregnancy, much the same way as what happens with Down Syndrome. So essentially, those who promote this "cure" are saying that we'd all be better off dead, I for one don't really agree with that.

That's one more thing that I hate about Autism Speaks. They want to abort us. They think that autism is a fate that's worse than death. Ignorant bitches will be aborting their unborn autistic children. As far as I'm concerned, Autism Speaks can f**k themselves. Evil or Very Mad

Thats so stupid that it's actually funny. Worse than death? You gotta be kidding me! All humans, with and without 'disabilities' face their own challenges. Saying that the challenges those with autism face are worse then death is a complete over-reaction.

About this Autism walk, I don't even know if we have one in NZ, but if there ever is one that I hear about, i'm going to protest at it. I'm sick of all of this..."autism is a disease...it's worse than death...it's heartbreaking" nonsense. People need to get it through their heads that WE ARE NOT DISEASED! Evil or Very Mad

How about this: abort all NT's...

1) It would solve the population problem
2) No more wars (we're all too busy obsessing over something else to be concerned with killing one another)
3) Massive technological advances

When I see posters like that, I take them down. If we all did so, there probably wouldn't be that many posters left on the walls. Wink

I wouldn't mind finding a cure for LFA. I can't think of any reason why someone would want to be LFA. And the rest of humanity doesn't want to have to provide care and support for these people.

HFA and AS is a shades-of-grey territory. Ask yourself, would you rather:

a. be cured
b. recieve no special help or support to accomodate your autism related difficulties, whatsoever?

Its been a while since I last posted but the walk is long over. And thanks to a combination of forgetfullness and just plain intimidation of pulling a protest (I've always been more of a follower than a leader) I didn't do anything about the walk. My special ed teacher said that the ASB was just trying to do something for a good cause. I really tried to get a picture of the poster for you guys but my scanner's busted. However, if they hold the walk again next year, I'll definently do something. I'm already thinking about what I'll do to inform my fellow students that there is more than one side to the cure controversy.

Rather than looking at this as such a bad thing, there is another side to this, this might be the perfect opportunity for you to show everybody else there what your thoughts on Autism Speaks are. Make a placard with something like "Wanna hear Autism Speak? ask an Autistic" or something.

Another nice part of this opportunity is that you probably know other people at the school who would agree with you if you tell them what Autism Speaks really does with the money, you should be able to get a few more people that agree with you, then protest the walk by walking the opposite direction as everybody else with your placard signs or something.

I don't feel that there's anything that's defective about me, and this is why I say no to a cure. A cure would be as bad as death, for a unique individual, like me. I'd lose my personality and my fighting spirit. I'd also feel the need to grow up and be as plain and boring as everybody else, my age. This is the reason that this Punker of Eternal Youth is saying no to a cure, for autism.

The deaf community has managed to establish itself as a subculture due to the common language shared by its members and the resultant shared cultural ties. Many deaf people would argue that their condition is not a disability, and reject attempts to 'cure' it. I wonder if the autism community might not benefit from their model.
