What do you think of Magic Workstation?
I know there are some complaints because mws sometimes crashes but it does have a search engine and a deck builder as well as a rather complete play interface (counters on permanentes, tokens, random actions, removed from game, sideboard wishing) Currently I have up to Shadowmoor (with images) but I'm not sure about it's anti-cheat features - I don't think it has any; other than listing a deck's format if it's legal and keeping a log of player actions. I don't recall thinking random players would be using hacks (like seeing my hand or getting suspicious draws); in mws there are mostly problems with hostile anonymous players that do whatever - other than that, I think the software itself is quite decent. |

The next problem is the added complexity over something simpler like Apprentice or Scroll Rack. We're probably not all in the same time zone, so I'd like as many people here at WP to be willing to try to play, and that means simpler is probably better.
And finally, mws is shareware! It has a nag box and 40-day evaluation period before you're legally supposed to buy it. Even if it actually keeps working after that, why bother with shareware when there are freeware and free software alternatives?
Scroll Rack is probably the simplest, followed by Apprentice, but building decks is easer with Apprentice. Firemox is probably the most advanced. I think it can do everything mws can and it can enforce rules. The added complexity might be offset by the rule engine, so more people may be willing to try.
That said, Apprentice is the only one I've actually used before. |

Just (briefly) tried Apprentice, Firemox and Scroll Rack.
I couldn't get Firemox to work due to some database issue (a lot of random cards were missing) and the fact that I couldn't even get to test in solo mode - too messy.
Apprentice and Scroll Rack seem the way to go. The interface is the same. Both have a deck builder.
Scroll Rack's database is up to Lorwyn and card images are readily available (which my mind seems to crave). I managed to port my favourite Extended deck and try a few mechanisms. The only thing that shocks me is the total lack of sounds whatsoever - Apprentice is better in this regard but I'm not sure if card images could be made available (all non-basics look like Rishadan Port, all artifacts like Lifeline, etc. . .). Not sure if Apprentice can support a wishboard.
Other than T2, I seem to be able to port most of my decks (i.e. Extended or Legacy) into either program.
Out of the two, if I had to choose, I'd pick Scroll Rack. |

Been playing MTG for a number of years now. I got into the game back during the Invasion block. My first deck was the Pandemonium precon from Apoc. Looking back I have no idea why I played a rainbow deck as my first deck. All I remember is that I really liked the green cards the deck had and thats why I stuck with it. The double spell Life/Death is what usually won me my games
Eventually the people I was playing the game with at the time fell out of it, my younger brother included. So I took a break from the game for a few years and got back into it during Mirrodin. I couldn't have picked a worse re-entry point. Like everyone else I took full advantage of the affinity nonsense available in Mirrodin and built myself a white/blue Broodstar affinity deck. I stuck with the deck for a very long time. I used it for practically 3-4 sets. Least thats what I think I did.
Anyways Ravnica eventually came out and by then if not a little earlier that affinity deck just wasn't working anymore so I built a bunch of other better decks and I've continued to stick with game since then. I'm a very casual player, I don't generally play in tournaments though I've gone to a few drafts. I play type 1 primarily because its what I'm best at and its what most of the other people I play with play.
I don't buy cards terribly often anymore. I found that buying single cards is far easier than coughing up money for boosters. Even then my deck building has slowed down over the years and is currently in limbo because I just plain don't like Lorwyn, Morningtide, and Shadowmoor. Though even if I dislike/hate a set if I get an idea in my head I won't hesitate to use cards that well help me reach said idea.
My two proudest achievements in MTG are my Angel deck and the fact that I own the ENTIRE Ravnica block card for card. I'm not sure why but I loved Rav to death and just decided on a whim to collect the entire block. Took me forever but hell was it worth it ^_^
I use MWS for organization, deck building, and card lookup. I don't really play online because my internet isn't stable enough nor do I really have anyone to play with. Either way for sorry rambling and all but I was just adding my two cents. _________________ "Sore ga Tengen Toppa! Sore ga Gurren Lagann!

Everyone is invited.
Sorry to make up the rules without further discussion, but I figure we'd better get started or this is never going to happen. I think it's reasonable, but we can always change the terms later if we want to. |
