In the meantime, invest in a good pair of ambient noise reducing headphones....
for when you need to work and the noise won't let you. |

Please keep us posted if there are any further developments in this matter. It's the kind of worst-case scenario that I'd like to be reassured turns out alright in the end... _________________ „It is better to be hated for what you are than loved for what you are not.” |

DUDETTE. Get competitive.
Why isn't your boss aware of your qualifications/history? Whilst I will admit that en employee owning a running business might put me off him/her for time management and distraction reasons, what reasons do you have for not telling your boss about your Masters?
I assume you're awkward socially so no wonder you're getting put in a crap location - they don't know your skills - all they see is a vaguely intelligent unknown who can string a sentence together well.. Tell them about your Masters though, and you may slowly start to come across as an eccentric genius.. and we all know that genii get better seats than unknowns.
Having said that, if you have your reasons for not telling them, let them be known! |

According to "Corporate Confidential" by Cynthia Shapiro, being moved to an unworkable workstation is strong evidence of being "managed out". Even as a contractor, the client contact you report to might not be able to justify reducing headcount. If you quit or are accused of something (even falsely), that person can say there is one less member on the team through "no fault of his own". You either need to discover and repair the reason you're out of favor (even if not your fault) or move on quick. My guess is that you don't have much time. |

OMFGBBQ! !11!!! Open plan/war room office!!! I once got fired from a job that had a similar office space configuration. I went into an aspie rage because Customer Support kept the lights dim and it was f**king with the color fidelity of a marketing mailer I was working on.
With regard to being "managed out", I just went through this (see my Thermonuclear Meltdown thread). My employer's stock is in the toilet and RIF's are flying fast and furious. My boss knew what would break me and played me against my weaknesses. |

I think it would be a good idea to get a mirror so people can't walk behind you unannounced. I had to do that when a manager used to swoop on me from behind. I agree it is a sucky looking location. The desk is good but they ought to pony up the money to get a proper tea-room for the coffee urn and suchlike. _________________ Break out you Western girls,

Sorry to be contrary, but I kinda like it. Near the coffee maker, no walk to the printer… I would put the headphones on my ears and ignore anything/anyone behind me. But my job allows me to focus on the computer, yours may not.
At a previous place of employment I had a vaguely similar situation. We had crumby, dirty, dark little cubicles, but as more people were hired they moved me “into the lab” to free-up a cubicle. (We debug software on machines in a lab, so working there is not that odd.)
The lab was well lit, but cold. Back then I was coming to work in a blouse, skirt & heels. Sitting in the lab meant sitting on a tall chair in front of an open lab bench (a high table-top and 4 legs) using the PC, emulator, etc on the bench. It wasn’t until I was in my new location for a week that I realized that I was “on display” for all the guys who passed thro, and many did each day. In retrospect, I don’t think my being relocated to this work area was an accident.
Maybe they have some hidden motive in putting your in that spot? |
