| No, some aspies just aren't "wired" to join the workforce and meet the requirements which allows people to become independent. |

What I do at work is different than how I act at home or somewhere else in a different format where I have to socialize. I hate my job but, when I am at work I am a little more calm (Strangely) also I feel more professional there too. I hate socializing at all don't get me wrong but when It comes to work my job sort of pushes me to be more professional.(I still feel strangely at work all or most of the time when I act professional because others act more laid back) _________________ Ya BOI!! |

I'll appologize in advance because I'm sure I'm going to offend a few here.
Everyone, I repeat, EVERYONE has some sort of issues!!!! I'll note that one of the richest men in the world supposdly has AS. I also strongly contend that EVERYONE can fulfill some use in society. Can you wash dishes? Sack groceries? Clean hotel rooms? No, none of these things are desireable or lucrative jobs, but they are all necesary. All of us here, over the age of 40, grew up in a world where no one had even heard of AS. I believe most of us could tell you of many times we tried and fell flat on our faces; but we got back up and tried again! Why? Because we needed to eat. I've done most of those jobs at one time or another, and yet now I make a very good living that most of the folks on this site would be envious of. No, I'm not Emperor of the world yet, (but I keep waiting for the position to open up), and I've nowhere near lived up to my potential, but through trying, and failing, over and over I've done all right, am reasonably happy, and you, or any one else can too.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that.
My uncle is autistic, he barely works. His wife has been the breadwinner of the family.
my mom also has a lot of aspie traits, she is not officially diagnosed but i think she is an aspie. She doesn't drive car, and she hasn't worked for 35 years.
my mom is happy with her life.
Every autistic is different, some would have an ocupation that will be autistic friendly, some won't and they'll have trouble keeping it |

Of course an Aspie can be living independently (both in practice and financially).
I must say I never had issues myself to find work so far, I have lived and worked in 5 countries now and ever since my first job I have never been unemployed for more than a week or two. Administering finances is something I sometimes struggle with, mainly because my OCD sometimes causes extra costs, but this is improving as well. With living on my own and finding/keeping a job, I never had issues. _________________ You did it again, yes, you in the mirror

Don't say that. I want to be independent! (I just lack the financial (and probably social) assets to do so...)
No offense, if you're fine with being dependant, good for you. I just don't want to be... |
You assume people who are in a dependent situation want to be that way. I don't think any human being wants to depend on others for their survival. It can be done with Asperger's, as evidenced by the people on this board who have eked out a successful existence, it's just that they are in the minority. _________________ I and the public know

I think that most people with JUST Aspergers (that has the classic symptoms) will at least struggle to get a job. Add depression, anxiety, bipolar, or other disorders and it's virtually impossible _________________ "You can do the math a thousand way, but you can't undo the past"

Yeah, and despite all the lip service given to hiring disabled people; I think employers can all too easily find ways against discrimination laws. Autism is a hidden disability which makes it all so much harder to get a fair go. _________________ Pagans are people too, not just victims of a religious cleansing program. I want to become an author or an editor, which is something that doesn't require so much socialization and more one on one stuff I believe _________________ "You can do the math a thousand way, but you can't undo the past"

I support myself and live in my own home. But is have been an hell of a way there.
The question and the selections to pick is confusing, i guess the alternative NO is the most reasonable one. |

Really? There seem to be several members with successful careers on the forum. I've never had a problem getting a fast-food level job.
Back to the OP, I think the original requirement of owning a home should have been removed from the poll. I have an older relative on the spectrum who has supported himself and lived in an apartment his whole life. Never had a reason to buy a home. |

I voted no, but not because of AS. It is impossible to generalize about any given group. No matter the syndrome, or lack thereof, some people just don't have what it takes. _________________ "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

The hypertechnical nerd reply - but this logic works on analyzing so many multiple guess exam questions:
Can ALL zzzz do xxxx -- of course not!
Even if most AS can find work -- although it may not be the job of their choice -- there are always some exceptions.
Almost any MCQ answer with ALL in it is a wrong answer.
Yes, there are SOME AS who will never hold productive jobs.
BUT
IF we are WILLING to work, and WILLING to do some of the less appetizing jobs with lesser "status"
The VAST MAJORITY of us can eventually find someplace where we can be productive.
We may have longer periods of unemployment, and lose some jobs because we p---ed someone off,
but
we should still spend more months with job than without
IF AND ONLY IF
we view being unemployed means spending at least 40 hours a week looking for work! |
