If someone asked me this question I would respond the same way "okay" and that's about it.

Who wants to think about work after you've stepped out of it? Things come out later if they need to. If not, then it was all good.

I usually just say "Did you have a nice day?" and he says "Yep" and then we move on. If I try to ask specific questions, he doesn't answer or is very abrupt.

Yes, he wants to pick up where he left off with whatever his interest is for the week.

I always ask my kids "Did you have a decent day?" If it's no, i will say. "Really, did something happen to make it bad?" If it's yes I ask, "Anything interesting happen today?" and if there is a no to that I just ask if he wants his snack.

I found that a question of "What did you do today at school?" gets an answer of "You should look in my bookbag..."

Oh and after I find out what happened to make it not decent I ask if everything was going okay before that happened, then we move on.

Whole conversation lasts about 30secs -1min. on average. (The conversation about what snack might be lasts probably 10 minutes...)

I usually say "Ok I guess...". If I am feeling horrible, I didn't care if it started out well, and vice versa. Last weekend, for example, I had a nice thing happen at the rental company, but does that negate the fact that I didn't get enough done, saw a pretty rude stupid person and another person all but threatened to deck me? NOPE!

Besides, the average person doesn't care.
