Jesus Christ! I hope Ms Barton takes them for at least 8 figures.

The United States needs a social enema.

Oh and by the way, next time someone on here suggests we're not at war with NTs, I'm going to draw their attention to this thread. We ARE at war with NTs. It is that simple.

No, we aren't. And if we are, we're basically screwed. NTs are not out to get us.

When I was 5 years old, I'm sure that my kindergarten classmates were quite relieved when my dad yanked me out of Brewer, Maine's Pendleton Street school because of my constantly disruptive behavior, and put me in a then active Free School called Skidikook School in Orono. -- I have to say that I had a better time at Skidikook, than I would have had at Pendleton Street dealing with Mrs. Adams and my former classmates.

Hopefully the kid's parants have similar opportunites.

I have to agree that this sounds like the end of every Survivor episode where the cast berate each other in front of the cameras and then vote one off the island. Actually, reality shows have very little in the way of reality, at least in the US. The contestants are often picked for their irritability and grandiose self-opinions, then instigated by the crew to enter into shouting matches. Many reality shows are nothing more than a 21st century version of the "trash TV" talk shows that used to be so popular, wherein the "host" would "interview" people from the margins of society with really odd problems ("My husband is having sex with my best friend and her stepdaughter!") and then bring all parties involved onstage for a confrontation. Trash TV was crass exploitation, and so is reality TV. I can't imagine how a teacher thought that subjecting a "different" 5 year old into listening to the coached berating of fellow 5 year olds and then having said 5 year olds vote the kid out of class, just like on reality TV, was a good idea. Kids that young can't tell fantasy from reality, they have no concept of hurting another person's feelings. That said, I bet a lot of those kids will feel awful about this.

I found a picture of the teacher. She's a big ugly colored woman. Since she's ok with discrimination, it would be sooo tempting to take the kid right in front of her and say. "Don't worry kid, it's not your fault, that's just how colored people are."

I gather that you think that this is an appropriate way to redress the situation. In fact this just further injures the child. It's not an appropriate thing to be posting on this web forum. Racism, subtle racist suggestions, or just putting ideas into people's heads is not consistent with this community's values.

St. Lucie teacher has students vote on whether 5-year-old can stay in class

PORT ST. LUCIE — Melissa Barton said she is considering legal action after her son's kindergarten teacher led his classmates to vote him out of class.

After each classmate was allowed to say what they didn't like about Barton's 5-year-old son, Alex, his Morningside Elementary teacher said they were going to take a vote, Barton said.

By a 14 to 2 margin, the class voted him out of the class.

Barton said her son is in the process of being diagnosed with Aspberger's, a type of high-functioning autism. Alex began the testing process in February for an official diagnosis under the suggestion of Morningside Principal Marsha Cully.

Alex has had disciplinary issues because of his disabilities, Barton said. The school and district has met with Barton and her son to create an individual education plan, she said. His teacher, Wendy Portillo, has attended these meetings, she said.

Barton said after the vote, Alex's teacher asked him how he felt.

"He said, 'I feel sad,'" she said.

Alex left the classroom and spent the rest of the day in the nurse's office, she said.

Barton said when she came to pick up her son at the school on Wednesday, he was leaving the nurse's office.

"He was shaken up," she said. Barton said the nurse told her to talk with the child's teacher, who told her what happened.

Alex hasn't been back to school since then, and Barton said he won't be returning. He starts screaming when she brings him with her to drop off his sibling at school.

Thursday night, his mother heard him saying "I'm not special."

Barton said Alex is reliving the incident.

They said he was "disgusting" and "annoying," Barton said.

"He was incredibly upset," Barton said. "The only friend he has ever made in his life was forced to do this."

The child's mother filed a complaint with the school resource officer, who investigated the matter, said Port St. Lucie spokeswoman Michelle Steele said. But the state attorney's office concluded the matter did not meet the criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges will be filed, Steele said. Port St. Lucie Police is no longer investigating, but is documenting the complaint, she said.

Steele said the teacher confirmed the incident did occur.

St. Lucie School's spokeswoman Janice Karst said the district is investigating the incident, but could not make any further comment.

Vern Melvin, Department of Children and Families circuit administrator, confirmed the agency is investigating an allegation of abuse at Morningside, but said he could not elaborate.

The teacher must've watched a few too many reality shows, doing this in real life is cruel and against the law. There shouldn't be a question about whether he gets to come to school or not in the first place, he deserves it as much as everyone else despite his asperger's. Having young kids vote about it is even stupider. They can't grasp the situation well enough to decide something as important as this. I hope it'll be sorted out as it should be and the boy won't be emotionally scarred from this.

Listen, teachers in every school do stuff like that all the time.
I remember in elementary school the teacher had a similar way of handling a kid who was really hyper and really a jerk to everyone, including going so far as holding out a hot dog and asking me to "bite his weeny".
There's nothing wrong with it, if a kid behaves badly and is causing problems to other student it's the teacher's responsibility to bring it to peoples' attention.
Parents who try to use their kids' disability or diagnosis as an excuse for their kid being mean or disturbing the peace are just being enablers for inappropriate behaviours and are encouraging their children to continue getting in trouble.

This is a Civil Rights issue. Because of the teacher's behavior (and influence upon the students), this child is being denied a Free and Appropriate Public Education. Evil or Very Mad

It isn't a Civil Rights issue. He wasn't diagnosed as AS yet, and he had a history of doing or saying something that made him unliked, of his own volition, that he probably had no real excuser for.
It sounds like the teacher handled the situation in the best way possible.

That may be sarcasm but I actually do love the teachers' unions.
They try to make sure that teachers, who are pretty much the most important people in society, the most major direct influence on nearly every individual life, get the reward that they deserve for their hard work, which is gradually being taken away from them by politicians and employers who don't know what it's like to work almost all-day trying to ensure that future adults succeed in life.
This is an issue that is personally significant to me as the son of someone who spent many years as a teacher having to put up with all kinds of trouble just to make it through every single long, difficult day of the school year.

People who insist their group is at war with another group (women are at war with men, african-americans are at war with caucasians, muslims are at war with christians, blah blah blahbedy blah) are usually people who have a lot of severe issues they need to sort out and are usually more than a little screwed in the head.
Statements like that make you sound like a lunatic.

Yeah, I got sick of it a while ago. A new thread was just posted in PPR that claimed NTs are the cause of every evil the world has every seen, while Aspies are perfect and blameless. It's some bizarre combination of class warfare ideology and elitism. Confused

Hypocrisy on our part won't win any greater understanding or acceptance, so we need to knock it off. NTs are usually decent people, and maligning them won't endear us to them.
