| What is the best defragment app out there for Windows? I used Perfectdisk in the past since it was the highest regarded defragger at the time. Is this still the app to go with or is there anything better out there now? |

I am using Executive Software Diskeeper, which works great, I did use Perfectdisk, but it was having
issues with defraging page files, and it corrupted my video partition, which required a format to fix

Perfect disk is the best.
Diskeeper is worst.
You should also investigate jkdefrag,
which does a good job, at a very low price. |

I use Power Defragmenter, which does the job quickly.
I don't recommend anyone to use the standard Windows defragmenter. It's very slow, and the alternatives out there are superior and often free. |

I use JKDefrag. It's free software and works well. It also has the option to sort files for even faster access. The outer edge of a hard disk can be read much faster than the inside.

I don't need to defrag my swap file, as it's on it's own partition at the end of the drive.

| I just tried out JKDefrag and it's by far the best defrag app I have used so far. It's great that it uses up barely any memory and I also like that it defrags all of your drives all at once in a row. |

yep,
you can hook up jkdefrag as your screen saver and run it that way automatically.
the windows built in defragger is a brain dead version of disk keeper,
and does a very poor job of defragmentation.
in my investigations, one of the things i noticed was a lot of files simply can't be moved.
with perfect disk, i was able to easily identify which files were the problem, and in most cases
it turned out to be the recycle bin that was causing the problem.
If you delete a directory, it is moved into the recycle bin as a directory,
and/or a large number of files in the recycle bin may cause the creation of a subdirectory.
When you empty the recycle bin, these directories are not deleted.
after futzing around a while, i found a trick that lets you really empty them.
i set the recycle bin disk space level to 0%, effectivly turning it off.
I rebooted and physically deleted the recycle bin file on each of my partitions.
I set the recycle bin disk space level back up to 10%, and rebooted.
when i ran perfect disk after that, the subdirectories in the recycle bin were gone,
and the defragmentation was better. |

Is that every day? Or just once a week?
(Actually, it has to be the latter, because the last time I did it, a couple of years back, it took more like a fortnight before I had everything back how I wanted it.)

Ya I always empty the recycle bin, I also turn off system restore, since those
can stop any defrag, I don't have it running on my other drives, since its kind
of pointless |
