Before I signed the lease for my apartment, I asked the landlord how well sound traveled from one unit to the next. He said that the location of my apartment made it effectively sound-proof, that no one would hear me and I would hear no one. (It's a small, quirky old building w/ 7 units). The building manager basically confirmed this, saying that only his apartment got any noise from mine and it was very minor. He said, "You're free to play loud music late at night!"

Now that I've been living here for over a month, I asked the building manager again if I was being too noisy. He said, "No, no one hears you. Please go ahead and play your music as loud as you want to at any hour. That's what I do and no one cares." So I continued to do what I had been doing - playing acoustic guitar, singing softly, and listening to my stereo at a normal volume until about midnight.

Then tonight, the building manager's girlfriend came to my door and told me that the family in one apartment have been complaining that I make too much noise late at night. She reminded me that quiet hours begin at 10pm and I have been playing my acoustic guitar and singing softly until about 11pm or sometimes even midnight. Apparently, these people are special because they have a baby (2 years old, but they treat him like a baby).

In fact, they are so special that the woman entered my patio (surrounded by a high fence) while I wasn't home, sprayed some weird hippie product all over it, and then later told me that it was necessary because she could smell urine from her apt window (far above my place) and she assumed it was coming from my patio because I have a dog. She assured me that the product was "non-toxic" but wouldn't tell me what it was, just that she covered my entire outdoor area with it.

These special people are trying to sublet their apartment and move out. I hope they succeed and are gone soon!! All my other neighbors seem cool.

Personally, I think that trespassing and tampering with a person's property without their permission is worse than playing an acoustic guitar and singing at a low volume late at night. Confused What do you think?

Anyone else dealing with annoying neighbors?

That pretty much describes my roommate the past two semesters.

This fall, I will be getting a one-bedroom apartment at my new school.

I agree that tresspassing is a much worse offense, particularly since you were not aware that your neighbor has such an affinity for dog urine.

I feel better now. I went to the local bar and had a good conversation with a guy who used to live in the same building and had similar experiences with those people.

there's always a lame neighbour, why don't you tell them that entering your grounds when you didn't give them permission could be considered an offence and that you demand it won't happen again, just be harsh on them maybe they'll listen, i've had similar experiences what same kind of people but in different situations, if you don't tell them what's right and wrong they'll just continue without consequence

Perhaps they would prefer something a little bit more musically soothing than solo acoustic guitar. Maybe some Dimmu Borgir, they're laid back and relaxing, or some nice light Meshuggah, but definitely not before 2 am. You would not want to be rude.

If I were in your shoes I'd be more annoyed that the manager's girlfriend was the one who came to talk to me. I'd question the existence of his testicles. I'd also have a few choice words with him about their trespassing; something along the lines of, "if they invade my space again it's your ass."

I would take some kind of action if they weren't trying to move out ASAP. On their last night here, I may blast something brutal like Carpathian Forest or something demented like Rudimentary Peni at about 3am, just to educate them about what an obnoxious neighbor really is like. Or I could invite a friend over and we could curse and scream at each other all night long - the worst type of obnoxious neighbor behavior, IMO, except trespassing and f**king with people's property.

Yeah, I agree with you on that, but the manager and his girlfriend seem nice, like people I might actually like to hang out with. I mean, she might have been the one to tell me because he was asleep or out doing something or whatever. Also, I forgot to mention the trespassing to them, but I really should have, and I will, especially if those f**kers cross the line again. Twisted Evil

Oh, and I like your avatar, flailure. Milton rules. And I think he just might be an aspie. Laughing

hehe Thanks! Milton is what happens when we get walked on one time too many.

It's good that you're staying cool about this with your manager there though. It's easy to sit here and say what I would do, but knowing how people like us think it's probably best to just take things in stride or we'll let it eat us alive. I know I get that way.

Side note: do you have any recorded samples of your music? Edit: nvm, will check myspace after work.

I had a property manager tell me to 'go ahead, we like loud music here!' and come to find out, they were trying to get the 'busy body' neighbors to move out with out having to lose their deposit. They told the new folks next door the same thing and he blasted his TV at all hours. Until the police showed up and told us all that we had to shut it down or go to court. We all went to the manager who finally told us he was basically using us to get them to move out.
Bad vibes for everyone in the complex.
