Why is it that when I interact with illiterate or nearly illiterate people, they don't pick up on my Aspie traits? Most illiterates I have met are pretty easy to get along with. And no, my posts are not jokes. They are real experiments in an attempt to think outside the box. This is an awfully big world we live in. What you're looking for in life might be right under your nose.

2 questions:

1 - Are these illiterate people from foreign countries? Foreign countries have enough differences that that might mask any differences you have as just something foreign about you.

2 - Are these illiterate people poor? Specifically, are they in a position where being rude to you might be financially inadvisable?

I'm asking these questions because of some stuff you said in an earlier thread, trying to put it all in context.

Yes, my experience is in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil and recent immigrants here in the US. Oddly enough, I'm convinced it's not about money. Many of the profoundly poor don't care about material things. It's more of a class thing. I sometimes get asked why a "big person" (their expression) would be interested in them. I tell them because I'm tired of being around rude cranky people. That pretty well settles the matter with an offer of a fresh cup of coffee.

There is one notable exception: Cuba. It's interesting how a choice between prison or literacy really motivates people. There, ideologically intense people want your company. Those who fully live Castro's indoctrination act like they owe their hospitality for listening in spite of the fact I told them I voted twice for President Bush (he is portrayed as Hitler on billboards in Havana). The anti-revolutionaries show the same acceptance. After being around both, I believe the anti-revolutionaries. They asked me to tell what I saw and heard to as many Americans as possible. In a nutshell: Life sucks for the typical Cuban.

If you choose to do this, seek the anti-revolutionaries first. Once your presence is known by Castro loyalists, you will be watched.

Great stuff. If I want friends all I have to do is look for:

-White supremacists
-Minority janitorial staff
-Migrant workers
-Illiterates.

What's next, dating the homeless?

Well! That's awfully discriminatory of you! Careful, they might kick you out of the Rainbow Coalition.

All sarcasm aside, most bums not very nice. My impression of them is they got where they are by bleeding dry everyone around them.

Yeah, an average Cuban has to choose between living in Cuba that has been constantly sabootaged and isolated commercially by a foreign country that feels entitled to do that or to go living in that very country that destroyed theirs to become a second class citizen there, it is awful.

You owe me a sandwich (one that's fit for human consumption) or a Vietnam-produced wheat pizza and a game of dominoes. That's what I expect for listening to Castro's party line.

Poverty isn't the worst aspect of their suffering. It's the shadow of knowing you could be arrested any time, any day, for any reason. Those who are chosen for the Committee for the Defense of the Revolution are expected to meet an offenses reported quota, even if they have to invent accusations. Failure to meet the quota could mean loss of privileges and extra rations and even dismissal.

Yeah sure, the problem is that if they all really didn't like the regime, it would have failed already, instead, those who don't just run away. Sorry but that doesn't fit with my perception of what happens to governments that don't get the majority's acceptance, those governments just fall down completely, this one lasted 50 years.

If you would really blame everything on Castro, it is still the embargo's (and therfore USA's) fault, isn't it? Afterall I think the embargo is the only way to explain how Castro stayed that long.

The US did exactly what the Cuban exiles asked. If they don't know how to free their own country, no one else would. I don't know anyone that likes getting arrested. Eight to ten percent approval is all that's needed for a dictatorship to keep power. Don't underestimate the power to kill or imprison your neighbor.

Tailfins1959: Who are you? Just in general, what are you doing? This is rhetorical so no need to answer, but maybe ask yourself. No need to hurt others if they're not 'you.' Your posts are rather disturbing - that's a given. Do you need the attention? Again, rhetorical question. Just a note: Hurting/degrading others is not impressive. Those who inhabit WP aren't here for a hate-fest; quite the contrary! Be respectful to the indigenous (ie: don't be mean to my friends here). Might want to assess WHY you are a member of WP. Again, rhetorical: What really is your Dx????

Is 'Nuts, NOS' in the DSM-IV?
