Passing this on from ASAN:
| Ari Ne'eman wrote: | Hello everyone,
Tomorrow, Good Morning America will air a segment discussing the neurodiversity movement, featuring comments from myself, Kristina Chew of the Autism Vox blog and Dr. Thomas Insel of the National Institute of Mental Health. Please tune in between 8 AM and 8:30 on ABC. Click here for local listings. |
I think that is Eastern time, though I don't know what time the show normally airs. _________________ Autism Speaks: The Walmart of the 501c's.

| If you could Kristina, put your two cents in! Read my post of spreading the truth of autism and Asperger's Syndrome. Of course you would have to do so very subtly and politely, but I believe that this is a momentous opportunity to make history for this very special community I will make sure to watch this. I myself have been waiting for this moment. Make sure you engender a positive image of Autism and other related types. I must say that what you are doing appears to be a step in the wright direction for the autism community and away from the bigot riddled community of people against autism in Autism Speaks and related organizations. Maybe I went a little overboard in this post, but just help spread the word. |

Sophist mentioned (on Gestalt) that this segment got postponed at last minute, 'til next day (Tuesday, this morning).
I was NOT awake Monday morning at that time, but THIS morning I was.
Thus, I caught the teensy little segment.
It was like this & like that, as was to be expected.
Was still cool (since I'm dial-up user & therefore devoid of ability to access online video) to see & hear a couple people that I otherwise only know of as written material & names (the guy whose name I can't spell or pronounce whom I've heard of-and Kristina Chew, whose blog I've read).
Of course, especially since I don't watch morning shows, it was particularly aggravating how brief, shallow, and broad the story was-but I realize that's how all features are on such types of programming. Like Reader's Digest version of Cliff Notes. _________________ *"You cannot administer a wicked law impartially-it destroys everyone it touches, its violators as well as its upholders."* |

For anyone who's wanting to watch it, it's now online:

Morning show reporting... ah... They spend more time on "How to Have Summer Fun" and recipes.
But congrats to everyone involved, all the people whose pics were used, and especially to Ari and Kristina. _________________ Autism Speaks: The Walmart of the 501c's.

I didn't like that reporter. It wasn't surprising how the handled the subject actually and of course the reporter so obviously is pro-cure considering how she said at the end "We are looking for a cure"
Then she seems to ignore the mother who doesn't want to cure her own son and it's just not surprising considering the owner of Autism Speaks has ties with NBC and GE.
These media companies are not really in much competition with each other as people like to think.
Also I disliked how the reporter said "What's wrong with parents who want to put an end to this..who would rather not see other parents have to suffer through what you are suffering through"
After the mother had already said she accepts her son.
Yeah these people suck. They are creating more negative stigma and a witch hunt. Do the other parents not see the path they are paving for their autistic children when they help with this witch hunt? It's sickening.
I just knew that they weren't going to really give a decent interview and would actually treat those who want acceptance in a subtle heckling manner.
That is how I perceived it.
Then at the end the reporter flat out gives her bias but doesn't say "I" she says "we" as in the majority of whoever we is.
How great. Don't you just love how reporters act as though they are really going to give a fair chance but instead put out this crap to hint at the viewers of how to really think. |

Forgot to add
Reporter if you are reading this please keep this in mind.
You would not be where you are right now if females did not stand up for their rights which later paved the path for your rights and if African Americans did not stand up for their rights which paved the path for your current rights.
I know you are getting paid to fit in and what not...I hope they paid you extra.
You seem to lack empathy reporter. hmmmm...... |

I didn't honestly expect brilliant things from the reporting. After watching such shows before, I didn't find their reactions or the level of the piece all that surprising.
However, I think it is a big thing that the story actually got on GMA. Like you said, given Autism Speaks' strong ties with NBC, I don't think such a story would ever be aired on NBC.
I think it's a step in the right direction. And while reporting biases were obvious, at least Ari and Kristina got the majority of the airtime and the head of the NIH (someone who was undoubtedly supposed to be representing the opposing viewpoint) barely got to speak and what he did say wasn't especially inflammatory.
Despite that the quality of the reporting could've been better, despite that the anchors' biases did show through, I think it was a big win. And hopefully this will be a foot in the door for Ari, Kristina, and others to do other shows-- hopefully better shows with more indepth reporting.
Baby steps, a little at a time. _________________ Autism Speaks: The Walmart of the 501c's.

It wasn't. It was aired on ABC
I didn't think it was so bad...though I'm sure the interviewees will tell us differently, it seemed like they got a fair share of different viewpoints across in such a short amount of time.
I caught a glimpse of one computer monitor that suddenly switched to a green and blue website =) _________________ How wonderful to be so profound. |

| I thought it was quite groundbreaking. Sure it was poorly reported but it was on a liberal media network. I'm just glad they didn't refer to it as the terrible sickening disease and illness of Autism/Asperger's. NT's will never accept Autism nor understand it. We need this kind of coverage more though to prevent an Aspie genocide due to pre-natal testing! Just be happy that our views got across. They should have showed how Autsies/Aspies are against cures and things. And who would want a genocide of their own people. Maybe we should do pre-natal IQ testing so that we can cut down on numbers of Nuero typicals. |

Yeah, overall it was really cool, but it disturbed me how the reporter referred to "noncommunicative, non-emotional" autistics. It gets me a sick feeling to be reminded that this is what people actually think about autism.
Non-verbal does NOT mean non-communicative, and a blank stare or unresponsiveness does NOT mean unemotional. I've been described in these ways, and THAT'S the sort of thing that makes autistics and their family "heartbroken".
And while to be expected, it's unfortunate that that one host described it as a way to "justify heartbreak". But come to think of it, it used to be said of gays that they were pleading for acceptance to justify their "illness", so despite the negative aspects, I see it as a marker of a turning point. There's going to be a lot more public exposure to this issue. Hopefully we'll soon get past the point where the arguments are way oversimplified reductio ad absurdem. _________________ "Public transportation is for jerks and lesbians." --Homer Simpson

While I agree with most of the above, the bolded statement I cannot condone. For one, whether you're implying that people with a low IQ should be selectively eliminated, not only would this be as inherently wrong as selectively eliminating autistics, but it would also eliminate a portion of autistics.
Also even if you're using IQ as a synonym for stupidity, aside from the fact that not all NTs are stupid, NTs shouldn't be eliminated or disliked by virtue of neurotype, and the assumption that low IQ = stupidity = should be eliminated is demeaning to people with low IQ scores. And this isn't even touching upon the questionable worth of IQ tests.
I know, it's a small statement that I'm sure wasn't intentionally meaning the things that I've pointed out, but however unintentionally, these things do have consequences, and I'd just like to point them out, as since I'm sure this wasn't your intent, it would be better to clarify why offense may be derived from it so that you could take this into consideration in the future. Thanks. _________________ "Public transportation is for jerks and lesbians." --Homer Simpson

| I was being sarcastic to show how ridiculous the idea is. Simply one way of showing a point. Sometimes I use poor sarcasm I guess. |
