Police say they will review how long it took them to respond as they continue to hunt the four men involved in the shooting.
Police kept an ambulance back for 38 minutes. Mr Verma also believes armed police were led to a cul-de-sac by their gps system, causing them to arrive late.
Police revealed that a member of the public "scraped the bottom of the barrel" when they walked into the liquor store where Mr Singh lay and stole a box of alcopops. Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher said police were not sure what the man saw, but were encouraging him to reimburse the shop.
Mr Gallagher said police had completed their scene examination and 25 officers were now on the case.
They were looking at possible links between Saturday night's robbery and other recent robberies in the area.
Mr Verma said Mr Singh might have survived if help had arrived sooner. "If ambulance had come in 10 or 15 minutes, there were chances of his survival."
Because he was still alive, Mr Verma and co-worker Gurwinder Singh thought the weapon used was only an air-gun. They called 111, both ambulance and police, and were told they were on the way.
"I said it was blood and vomit coming out of his mouth. Then they asked me to see where he had been shot. I saw it, and I saw it was very small, not that big."
He was told the ambulance was one minute away.
"He was my friend," Mr Verma said. "He was a very, very nice man. He was very polite. Very good family man, very hard-working."
FATEFUL MINUTES:
Saturday, June 7
9.07pm - 111 call made from Riverton Liquor Shop.
9.10pm - Ambulance dispatched to the scene.
9.18pm - Ambulance arrives at police cordon. Unable to proceed to scene.
9.46pm - Paramedics finally reach an injured Navtej Singh inside the store.
LOST TIME:
Police have defended the time it took emergency services to reach the fatally injured South Auckland liquor store owner but will review the response.
Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher said yesterday that police had to follow a standard procedure in any emergency callout involving firearms to "ensure the safety of everyone".
With reports that it took St John Ambulance 38 minutes from the first emergency call before it was able to give medical assistance to Navtej Singh, Mr Gallagher was questioned about how long it took for police to respond to initial emergency calls.
He said the response time was appropriate given the circumstances, and police were confident ambulance staff had been allowed in at the earliest possible time.
St John crew members were not allowed into the liquor shop to help Mr Singh till police gave them clearance to enter.
Sandeep Verma, Mr Singh's co-worker, said he could hear the police sirens but realised they had been fooled by a glitch in global positioning system maps - which show one end of the street to be connected to the motorway nearby, though it is not.
"Everyone was frustrated. Even [Mr Singh] called 111, heaps of times, from the shop phone. I was calling from the mobile again and again.
"There was no response. No one was coming." |

| Yeah true, but it still embarasses me that the governement pander to people like this. People like that don't deserve human rights. |

| The additional delay at the Police cordon really sucks. I can't understand why Police would delay an ambulance like that. |

| Many people here in NZ are either on drugs or alcoholics. Did you see the Aspie guy last night who was jailed for rape cause he looked different? He had an alibi. At least they quashed his conviction albeit after 5 years. |

What? You can't jail someone because they "look different". I don't think that's true.
I agree with alcoholics.. everyone here seems to have a complex with getting drunk all the time.. and you are "no fun" unless you do. |

| At least there are a few good people left in the world like you, Hale_Bopp. It is a shame that the world seems to be going downhill; I think that because of more efficient technology, more of this bad behavior is just getting reported. We humans haven't changed in the last 10,000 years; our rules and technology have, which although slightly improved, has rendered only somewhat helpful. For every reasonable rule and law that renders itself upon a society, there will always be those that try to break it or find a loophole in it. But at what cost? Our only hope of survival is education and kindness to others. Anyway, enough of my incessant babbling; I hope that someone will read this and realize that there is at least one good person in the world. |

| Marvin Gaye died for the same reason - the police wouldn't let the ambulance people in until they found the gun. The assailant threw the gun into some bushes, sat on the front porch, and didn't tell them where the gun was. If Gaye had gotten medical help sooner he'd probably have survived. Tragic. |

You try living in NZ with Aspergers !
but to be honest there are problems world wide, it use to be a lot worse in London in regards to crime...
Im regards to article A Guilty Look - Aaron Farmer’s, I did watch it last night...
And feel this is one of many stories where injustice has been done, because its always easier to put the blame on someone that is a little different, others for some reason find it easier to try and intimidate those of us that do not fit the stereo type norm. The bullying often starts at school, and for some does not stop in adult life having horrendous consequents...
This person is in my home town, and do know how narrow minded people here can be at times... I myself continue at times to get wrongly judged because I do not quite act and communicate like everyone else. Its like if you do not do and act like the majority there is some think wrong with you, how could you be intelligent looking, acting or just being the way you are! and for some reason its seems to make the average person feel better to criticize what they do not understand.
I love the way when he was convicted just stopped talking, no one was listening so he decided not to talk, I do this myself at times for short periods of time, guess away of cutting out the world that does not want to listen or understand.

I think it's the 'tall poppy syndrome' they're always on about in the media... cut down those who stand out for whatever reason.
