What is your first name? Sarah.
Age: 39.
Location: East Anglia, UK.
Current perseverations: Finally cracking down and writing a novel after many attempts over the years. Discovering G. M. Ford's Leo Waterman crime novels, which I started reading because of the setting but I'm also finding they're dead funny. Art and music, as always. And the song of the moment, 'Giga Dance' by Deerhoof, which I keep listening to over and over like I sometimes do with songs.
When did you discover AS? A few years back, I started hearing about it. It was only when someone mentioned the 'obsessions' part that I started going 'Hmmm...' I have been 'hmmm'-ing for a few years now, but just recently, found that so many of the descriptions I'd read made sense that I'd better look into this further.
Do you have other psych diagnoses? Depression and anxiety. Last bout of depression was five years ago. Currently still on medication for anxiety, but working on dealing with it.
Do you have a degree? No. Didn't stick with art college long enough to get one.
Kids? No. Love them, but think I have too much baggage myself to raise any.
Favorite music, other than NIN Believe it or not, I do occasionally listen to stuff other than Nirvana now and again! Actually, a pretty wide range of stuff....everything from Pixies to Shins to Regina Spektor to Bach to Johnny Cash to Metallica to the Presidents of the USA to the Trachtenburg Family Sideshow Players. And basically anything that makes me go 'Wow, this is good!', regardless of whether anyone else has ever heard of or likes it.
Job? I'm a medical clerk in a pathology lab. It pays the bills, satisfies my 'Body parts! Cool!' tendency, and keeps me safely away from hordes of people.
Relationship with significant other, past or present? Married too young, divorced, spent a while alone, now happily married to husband #2, eight years and still going strong.
Plans for the future? Long-term, moving to the USA (yes, I have no illusions about how difficult that may be), becoming a published author, playing guitar in little clubs and having an underground following, and having my hair dyed slightly more pinkish than at present. Mid-term, attending the Bumbershoot this fall. And short-term, worrying about tomorrow's 'cello lesson and thinking about putting the kettle on if my husband hasn't already.
Anything else you feel is pertinent: I'm the most verbose creature on earth. People who know me know that there is no such thing as a short email from me. So, please excuse me if I exhibit that tendency here. _________________ Birds scream at the top of their lungs in horrified hellish rage every morning at daybreak to warn us all of the truth but sadly we don't speak bird. |

Do you have a degree? BA in English; graduate school in English and Publishing; some programming, business
Kids? No. Helping my adult niece and nephew get on their feet.
Job? Technical writer for an engineering firm.

What is your first name? Sunfell
Age: 47
Location: USA
Current perseverations: I prefer to call them Special Interests. Science, science fiction, cats, cooking, gardening, computers, internet, internet culture, blogging
When did you discover AS? I learned about it while researching gifted adults. I do not have a formal diagnosis, since I am an adult, and apparently most psych-docs think it's a kid's thing.
Do you have other psych diagnoses? Seasonal Affective Disorder
Do you have a degree? Associates in Communications Electronics
Kids? Heck, no.
Favorite music? Stuff you've probably never heard of- lots of electronica, dance, trance, new age, lounge, world, space music, chill, jazz, etc.
Job? Computer tech
Relationship with significant other, past or present? none
Plans for the future? Own a home
Anything else you feel is pertinent: When I was a kid, I was tested as gifted, and considered an oddball. Today, they'd consider me autistic, and consider me damaged and in need of drugs. I am really glad that Aspies did not exist when I was a kid. Childhood and youth was rough, but I survived it. |

I'm 55 and just discovered I have it. Now I know that the gifted thing comes with the painful stuff, and I can learn the social skills--I'm looking forward to the best of both worlds now. Hope you are too. _________________ "Me voici donc seul sur la terre, n'ayant plus de frère de prochain d'ami de société que moi-même." Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Location: The Illawarra region, New South Wales, Australia
Current perseverations: Wrong Planet first, daylight second, housework a distant third
When did you discover AS? Several years ago, but wasn't officially diagnosed until November 2007
Do you have other psych diagnoses? Depression, OCD, ?BPD
Do you have a degree? Yes, but this impresses no-one

What is your first name?
Rebecca
Age: 45
Location: Spokane, Washington (USA)
Current perseverations: Writing a disaster novel, my granchildren, World of Warcraft and various other video games, gardening (vegetables -- flowers can grow themselves) ;D
When did you discover AS? Last year when my son's oldest was diagnosed with classic Autism
Do you have other psych diagnoses? Currently Dysthimia and Schizoid Personality Disorder (The fact that I've had the same conditions as long as I can remember means nothing to the diagnosing psychiatrist. I'm 45 so I don't have Asperger's. I've always thought I was smart but I still don't get that one...)
Do you have a degree? I earned an AA in Liberal Arts, but I never applied for the diploma, haha
Kids? Two. My daughter is 25 in August and has a fantastic 7 year old boy (with ADHD and possible Asperger's) and a VERY spunky 4 year old daughter (she's beautiful too -- and I'm not even a little prejudiced). My son is 26 as is his wife and they have a 4 1/2 year old boy with Autism, fairly high functioning we think, and a 3 1/2 year old boy who pesters his older brother mercilessly. (He doesn't understand that Aidan has autism, you see, and expects his brother to play with him. Aidan shows remarkable social skill according to his teachers. We blame Kai for them.)
Favorite music, other than NIN. Sorry, no NIN. I like Country, Christian, Pop, Oldies and Classical.
Job? I take care of my son's two boys while he and his wife work and go to school.
Relationship with significant other, past or present? I was married for 5 years 20+ years ago. I've been single ever since.
Plans for the future? Well, I want to finish my book (I'm going to destroy Spokane!!) Then I want it to sell like the Harry Potter books and make me rich enough to start an Autism Commune where autistics can go and work on farms or in workshops or other sheltered environments according to their abilities and interests.
Anything else you feel is pertinent: Anyone with knowlege of microbiology or epidemology or computer modeling who wants to help me with some of the technical aspects of my book feel free to e-mail me at rianya@hotmail |

| Like most places Spokane has its good points and bad points. It's been a great place to raise my children as a poor single mother. My children are grown now, but I know they had wonderful opportunities that wouldn't have been available to them in other places simply because there were lots of scholarships for programs here. On the other hand, employment opportunities are sketchy and the politics here are twisted, to say the least. I like Spokane, but I wouldn't say it's for everyone. ;D |

When did you discover AS? I was diagnosed a year ago.
Do you have psych diagnoses? Depression

First name -- private. I'm Catana on most sites.
Age -- 71, which may make me the oldest person around here.
Perseverations -- still not sure exactly how that differs from obsessions, but mine is lifelong -- undrstanding the human mind.
Discovered AS -- three or fours years ago, but didn't think of it as being relevant to me personally until a couple of years ago. Self-diagnosed. Uncertain about it until I started dredging up my childhood. No uncertainties now, even though my Aspie traits are very mild, and I can pass for NT.
Other DXs -- depression (official), ADD (self-dx), possibly BP II (suggested by therapist, but never explored)
Family -- widow with two grown sons.
Degrees -- none. Couldn't stand school or college. Pretty much an autodidact.
Plans for the future -- finish analyzing and explaining intellectual giftedness, keep working on same for Aspie intelligence. |
