Same as for people not with ASD very varied, we are all different unique individuals... I am a happy and proud aspie some days, but no one is every day... but we can be more honest, so your more likely to hear about our bad days Very Happy

I was suicidal depressed until I was in my early 30's and went on anti-depressants. I think most of my depression was denying myself time for my special interests (which I now do), gettng in bad relationships with people who either used me for sex or tried to change me and having to go to jobs I hate. I am now in a good relationship and I think I could get off the meds if I didn't have to work at something I hate but spent my time only on my interests. Most of the other things I have "worked" out already...such as trying to be more NT to be excepted. Now I don't bother except for my job and I am much happier.

Depression is common, I am going though a very bad depression right now, its goten worse over the last 2 weeks, I don't want to take antidepressants since they make me feel worse, on top of this I am having trouble with my landlord and the new idiot tenant that moved in a few months back.

The not-so-great depression topic

Troublesome landlords and tenants from hell suck. And we Aspies have a hard enough time coping with bullying NTs. Sad

And the so-called renegade NTs, who make a big deal about accepting us, constitute many of the "double agents", commonly known as backstabbers. No wonder we are depressed. Rolling Eyes

I'm not depressed... though I am prone to seasonal depression in the winter, what with having only seven hours of daylight when the days are shortest. (I treat it by having a "daylight" light bulb next to my bed, which I turn on as soon as I wake up, plus another in the lamp by my computer.)

If you don't want to take an antidepressant, take St. John's Wort or 5-HTP.

I dont only have aspergers, I am also depressed as well. I take lots of psychiatric medications. I wish they had medications to avoid me from having a melt down. I take strattera 60 mg, concerta 54 mg, clonadine 1mg, cymbalta 120 mg , geodon 240 mg are my psychiatric medications. I just wish there was better medication out there to prevent me from having depression, and to prevent me from having a melt down, because when I have a melt down, it gets severe, and sometimes it is dangerous.

i've been treated for depression, anxiety and other related disorders for yrs. i wonder if i had been diagnosed properly w/ asperger's syndrome and had early intervention services if a lot of the psychiatric issues would have been reduced, as they were related to nervousness around other people, extreme shyness, inability to relate to others. i just recently realized i have asperger's after having two boys diagnosed w/ asperger's and pdd. i'm doing much bttr now, now that i know why i react to things the way i do and the meds help.

like i sd an earlier diagnosis and treatment for the real problem might have helped maybe not?? what are other people's experience w/ this?

do you think your autistic traits lead to depression or do you think they are separate? After 39 yrs, I really think my autism difficulties caused depression, anxiety, and ocd.

I can't think of a situation, or state of mind, in which meditation will not provide at least some relief.

I strongly recommend it for anyone and everyone!!! Idea

Depression is certainly a big part of the aspergers condition however once you recognise the depression for what it is... a symptom of the condition rather than the "real" depression itself, it's possible to go long periods without it impacting on you.

Sure, you still get depressed thoughts but at the same time you can be insanely happy.

I sure do. I am on several antidepressants and it has made life so much better. I had problems with controlling my emotions. They were so intense, they would completely take me over.

Im sure there are happy aspies but Im guessing the incident for depression is probably higher since theres a lot more challenges that aspies face that others. For me, Ive gone through cycles of depression for the last three years. The last cycle was the worst becuase I was adjusting to college, it really hit very hard. I went through a slew of misunderstandings with people realizing that I cant really rely on anyone. They will sometimes try to help with good intentions and in the end just dont understanding me at all. My school didnt understand me and I really came on edge with things and got suspended for the rest of the semester in my first semester. But I came back and realized who where my friends and who werent and those whom I didnt know yet, to connect yet not to keep my bad side away from them.
