I personally think it's a little weird that someone would lock himself up just so he could raise money for Autism. I doubt that he would want the money for Autism.

I found this on the homepage of this site and Alex critiqued it as "shameful". How is it shameful? I'm just curious. Also, where in the world did he get a jail cell????

I think it's disgusting and stupid but could be fun all at the same time. Does he get jail food? I think it would be funny to give him cavier and wine in his jail

the local Junior Chamber of Commerce does that type of 'jail 4 bail' stunt locally, and it is their way of having fun, calling their friends to pay $500.00 to $1,000.00 to bail them out. They usually hold it at the mall with a mock jail cell and ( I live in the West Coast) the props and scenery is just out of an old Western movie, with Sherrifs and hats and boots and striped shirt and pants for the 'jailbird'.

The charity is not even a part of it, they just have fun and raise money and send it to the milk fund or Jerry's kids or the Bookmobile or what ever.

It's pretty mediocre theater. But they do it for themselves. The charity gives it 'validity' is all.

I think it is important to read the article in full and also go to the charity's referring website (http://www.autismwesterncape.co.za). The emotions behind the fundraising initiative is not a fun one, at all, it is to show how children with autism are viewed as entrapped and how parents are locked into their homes because of autism.

And yes, it is pretty weird that he is locking himself up. Yes, he wants the money for autism but it is about the image that he is portraying to the public. We try so hard, day in day out, to put a positive image across to get autistics accepted and integrated into society without alienation and being perceived as stupid, dangerous or unemployable. This stint is a selfish one focussed on parents' pain as opposed to actually focussing on helping autistic people. That is the problem.

The Jail 4 Bail campaign concept was initiated by Autism Western Cape with the intent of increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders and to raise significant funds to sustain existing and develop additional services, facilities and support. This is intended for both rural and urban (Cape Town based) development as well as outreach into the Southern Cape, where limited services are available.

The organisation has been in operation for over 41 years and has continued to develop, deliver and sustain services and support during this time.

The Jail 4 Bail campaign’s business plan was drawn up over 9 month’s ago, with the very real intent of securing sponsorship, collaboration and freely given assistance as widely as possible to ensure that operating costs are kept to a minimum. This we have achieved.

The concept was widely disseminated and discussed with parents, professionals in the field of autism and individuals on the autism spectrum as well as non-autistic organisations and associations.

The widely held opinion was that there is a need for an awareness campaign that is strong enough to develop a wide footprint and to initiate widespread “conversations” about autism spectrum disorders. The primary message is: Prejudice and ignorance imprison.

It is important to note that autism spectrum disorders affect every individual in a unique way. The message we want to get out there is that we are all different and it is normal to be different. We need to have mutual respect for all our differences.
