Do you suspect or even know where your ASD comes from? I'm asking in relation to genetics and family histories of ASDs and ASD traits. I wonder how many people suspect or know ASD traits run in their families.
I'm also asking for all those, who think their autism isn't entirely heredity. Or not even genetic.
And those who're unsure because there seems to be no simple answer.
I, for example, have no clue. I first suspected one side of my family strongly, but after quite some research now, I am very unsure. Nobody else in my family is mildly impaired in something or definitely on the spectrum. But other side of my family can't be it either.
So I'm the first. No idea why I'm autistic though. At least it can't be vaccination.
How about you? _________________ AS/HFA + ADHD

Traits run on both sides of the family, and I guess in me, they merged in just the right way. _________________ How wonderful to be so profound. |

My father has Asperger's. He gave it to me, or so they say, anyway.
No one else has any subclinical signs, other than a sporadic symptom here or there (I'm sure everyone has some behavioural manifestations of an ASD if you look hard enough). |

physical awkwardness and difficulties socializing, constant visible anxiety resulting in stimming behaviors, lack of eye contact, obsessive specialized interests, tendency toward monotone-sounding speech - neither of my parents exhibit any of these, but my dad's mom and sister both do... _________________ "I don't mean to sound bitter, cynical or cruel - but I am, so that's how it comes out."

My Dad has Asperger's. I also have schizophrenia which probably enhances the AS symptoms. _________________ Diagnosed with AS and paranoid schizophrenia. |

Almost certainly my father had it, although he died decades before it had a name or was a diagnosis. Sounds like his father (born about 1880) may have had it as well. My mother is definitely NT, but has some interesting traits that I also inherited and that make my aspie traits more practical and perhaps make my life easier. Probably little or no environmental influence involved for me. _________________ "If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat." Mark Twain |

While not to a diagnostic level, I can see some of the traits I have exhibit strongly in my mother. My father is somewhat antisocial, and I do not know him well enough on a day-to-day basis to know or be able to analyze his behaviors. If there are environmental contributors, some of those would be logical as well given the situation at the time of my birth.

| Definitely from my mom's side of the family. Both my children, my cousin's son (mom's great nephew), and my brother definitely have autism. I suspect I do, or at least have a LOT of aspie tendencies. And I know my mom's uncle had "water on the brain" and that's supposedly linked to autism in some way. There's probably more people, but we were never close with my mom's side of the family. |

| i definitely get adhd from my dad's side. my mom and i are just realizing how obvious it is that he has it since i got diagnosed. i know i get tourette's from my mom's side, my mom had tics, i've seen some of my cousins with tics. anything anxiety related or depression related comes from my mom's side. i'd say AS probably comes from my dad's side. he's a bit socially awkward, can't read people very well, etc. |

| My dad was an all american BSer. He could walk up to anyone and start a conversation, bew loved instantly. My mom on the other hand, she's where the AS comes from. Very analytical person who went into nursing, she's just really poingant, to the point, no bs. So I have the daunting task of being both and neither at the same time! Its hard to be like my dad for so long in a day but being me(like my mom in otherwords) tends to leave people a little cold. They dont understand I merely speak what I feel is truthful. I dont bite my tongue and I get that from her. Dad could just make anyone laugh, I can too sometimes, but I really have to want to be social. |
