| Anyone here download torrents of PC games? What was your experience? Do you need a cracker or something to get them to run? Also, can you play these games online with no cd key? I haven't done this before, I am just curious... |

Why not just buy the games?
Faster, easier, and legal. |

Here's a tip: never ever download a cracker program. I had sold my physical copy of Warcraft III, and desperately wanted to play it again (I still had it installed), and so downloaded a couple of programs. That was a mistake. A trojan activated, and it took me the best part of a year trying to get rid of it.
So, good tip for all: always buy your games legally, and as a physical copy. Believe me, it's not worth having a trojan set up malware on your computer. _________________ I'm more of a "good for Dave" kinda guy. And feeding people to dragons is good for Dave. |

I personally have had no issues like the one stated above. I usually use it for a "free trial" before actually buying a game... if they don't have a legal free trial online already. You just have to be very careful. Also, if you like the game, please BUY IT! It both supports the people that you buy it from and shows that there is a market for that type of game. (Better chance of more of the same ) _________________ Humm, guess I should put something witty here, huh? |

Some games aren't sold anymore. If you can't find them on Ebay, you're SOL.
I wouldn't ever use BitTorrent, though. I have no personal experience with it - however I see so many other users on our network (I'm work for an ISP) that get their bandwidth trashed because it opens their systems up to hosting files. |

Ditto. Torrent files are almost always laced with trojans. |

You can do it, but it's safer to have a friend do it for you, and steal theirs. Hey, you didn't download it.... right?
Here's one I know some people use: http://www.demonoid.com/
But remember, IT'S ILLEGAL. |

You think? I've been using music/movie torrents for a couple years now and have never gotten a virus. |

I dont play games anymore, but i during my last few years i d/led all of them, with almost no problems.
Go to a proper community like demonoid, and just check the comments to see if it works and is safe
Ill say this though - just to be on the safe side keep a seperate computer for financial & particularly sensitive stuff. Dont ever connect the 2 computers, that way no hacker/trojan/whatever will ever get your bank details.
If you dont want to have 2 physical seperate computers, just run 2 hard-discs in one computer, and remember never to connect them both at once. |

I don't download movies but I download music and I haven't had any virus' either. But whenever I download a game or program I scan it before I run it and they usually have a virus. |

| I prefer to download all my PC games, but I do so legally using stores such as Steam. I am a big fan of digital distribution when it is done sensibly, without excessive copy protection measures. |

It depends on the game. A lot of newer games have complex copy protection that requires internet connections. Some of them have cracks, some don't. Some games check your CD key when you play online, some don't. A lot of the older games, the only copy protection is that you have to have the CD in to play, and some of these have even been patched to circumvent this (whether officially or not).
Like the other guy said, downloading cracks is pretty risky...a lot of the websites you get them from are riddled with viruses, and even the cracks themselves should be scanned before running (though often they come up as false-positives). Your best bet is to find a torrent that comes with the crack, or a torrent of the crack seperately.

Legal, yes. Faster and easier? No.
In today's world of finicky copy protection, so many people are sick of buying a game legally and finding they can't run it without a CD crack, they just skip buying it altogether.
I still haven't bought BioShock because Securom is an abomination. I could barely run the demo without it crashing half of the time. _________________ How wonderful to be so profound. |
