What's your favorite compiler (note I did not say interpreter) and why? You may include a version or range of versions if you think it's relevant (for example, the Borland Turbo C++ compilers of the old MS-DOS days). The compiler can be for any programming language, but obviously C and C++ are going to have more compilers than the rest.

Delphi was very crashy, Turbo Pascal was great, but I think we have reached a time where we need to bury the 640kB limitation. Thus I think the best Pascal compiler is FreePascal.

For C/C++, I only used gcc or g++ so far, They're okay, but are terribly misleading when giving error-messages (add the utter insanity of C and C++ and you know why I dislike them) shrug

I also used Java's compiler but I can't compare it to FP since that'd be like comparing apples to oranges.

Does the IDE count, or are you talking about compilers in terms of compile-link-load.

For development, there is nothing better than big brother's Visual C++. All capabilities are wrapped into one (autocompletion, debugger, etc...). ddd is a decent debugger, but pails in comparison to the ease of use of VC++'s integrated debugger.

Microsoft Visual C++ due to its ease of use.

If we're allowed any era, the PETSpeed compiler was absolutely brilliant.
