About the third week of kindergarten, when I recited the alphabet before anyone else could. I also counted up to 700 by 7's, named every state and its capital, and demonstrated my ability to do simple multiplication and division.
On the way home, a bunch of kids jumped me and beat me up for "being a smartie" and "making them "look like dummies". That was 1962, and my home-town school district did not have any advanced education program, and the nearest one was 30 miles away and charged too much for tuition.
From then on, my social life declined considerably. Even the teachers argued over who was going to get me the next year. _________________ a. Science is the vast graveyard into which all irrational beliefs are eventually laid to rest.

I believe that I was [u]aware[/i] of it once I started school, but it didn't even occur to me that being a loner was a bad thing until I got to grade 7/8. After that the few friends I had kind of kicked me to the curb, and by grade 11 it just got to the point where I didn't even feel like making the effort to be social anymore and became more or less mute.
Sometimes it bothers me, but I'm pretty happy (and used to) keeping to myself now.

Apparently when I was in kindergarten, my teacher kept calling on me to spell out words like 'cat' and 'big', but I refused to do so. She put up with that for a month or so before she finally approached my parents and asked them to encourage me to be more "involved". According to my mom, when she asked me what the problem was I told her that I didn't want to waste my time spelling tiny baby words. Don't actually remember any of it, but I also learned from the 'rents that I continued to put myself in similar situations until my classmates started to both verbally and physically attack me.
I've never really seen myself as being overly smart or anything, but that same teacher saw me when I was 13 and told me that I was supposed to skip a grade or two, and the only reason it didn't happen was because I was too quiet/not developed enough socially. It's always been obvious. I'm eighteen years old and I've never had a boyfriend, never been on a date, and can barely work up the nerve to talk to boys. _________________ Insert witty quote here. |

Social life? Hmph! I was always far too good to mingle with the common folk.
I finally grasped that I'd have trouble even if I wanted to around middle school, though. I suppose it's illogical that that should have been so depressing - if I didn't want to do it, why did it matter if I could? - buut... I felt all defective and yeah.
Amusing: Before then, I honestly didn't understand what a certain girl was getting at when she began greeting me by putting a finger to her temple and saying, in the most nasal voice possible, "According to my calculations..." I just assumed she was the weird one. |

| In a way, I've always subconsciously known, but it didn't really hit me that I'd be stuck in the outer rim forever until I hit third grade, which was when I moved for the THIRD time. |

What about you? |
In the middle of 4th grade. Before that I knew that some kids that I liked didn't like me, and that I was teased. But I missed so much school in kindergarten through third grade due to being sick a lot and having an exceptionally overprotective dad, that I didn't get a chance to notice all this as much until 4th grade, and because I wasn't allowed to play outside much anyway, I never got a chance to see how I was treated or if I was left out. Also I didn't seem to care as much about making friends (except with kids I especially liked) until about 3rd grade. |

| It always has, really. I try not to let the fact that I feel like a social moron hinder me in any way. I can usually talk to people after a few drinks and occasionally even hold some interesting conversations but I get the impression that I'm a bit too negative for most. People are interesting to talk to though and I try my best. Having said that, it's not easy for me to show interest if it isn't there. |

| When I was younger and throughout my early teenage years, I used to love to write stories and draw pictures for them. My sister and i would write our own and sometimes combine our characters. i had a good group of firends in elementary, but not middle or high school. at some point in the 8th grade i realized i wasnt experiencing what my characters were, so i felt somewhat like a poser since they tell you to "write what you know", so i stopped while deciding that after i have lived life for a bit, i will come back to writing. haha |

I didn't really understand that anything was wrong, though my parents and the other kids did. My mom used to complain that I didn't talk to the other kids at recess. I'd talk to the teachers instead!
All in pre-school and kindergarten, I'd play little games by myself, and I didn't get that what I was doing was odd, until one day this little girl came up to me and decided she was going to be my best friend. I was confused and a little insulted, but I decided she was just being nice, and she seemed like a good person to be friends with, so I was cool with it.
I STILL didn't really get that I was supposed to be talking to and playing with the other kids instead of being weird, off in my own head, but I figured having a best friend would be an interesting experience. I liked my best friend a lot, and sometimes I even would talk or play with other kids, but things didn't really connect until I transferred schools in 4th grade. I was placed with these kids who hadn't known me since kindergarten, and I ran into a lot of trouble. They were snobby to all the new kids, but even when I shared interests and had earned a bit of sympathy with them, there was something wrong. We just couldn't relate to each other. |

I realized there was something seriously wrong with me in this respect at the age of four (kindergarten).
At about the same time my mother started complaining to others that I had no friends. |
