There's a fenced-in patio in front of my apartment. The latch is very shoddy. On Saturday, it fell apart while my dog was out on the patio. He pushed the door open, ran out into the street, and was hit by a large SUV.

He got up and walked towards me in a daze. He had a gash on his head and one of his legs was scraped up. The driver of the car pulled over, confirmed that the dog had been hit, apologized profusely, and offered us a ride to the vet. I decided to take him in my car instead.

In my shock, I forgot that my car was nearly out of gas. It ran out of gas and died on the freeway. My friend and I had to leave the dog lying in the hot car, bleeding, while we ran to the nearest gas station and bought 2 gallons of gas and a gas can . . .

That was the first time I ever had a car run out of gas. It was also the first time an animal of mine was hit by a car.

Although the dog was coughing up blood by the time we got to the vet, he turned out to have nothing more than a bruised lung. He spent one night there and was sent home with antibiotics and analgesics. He's sleeping a lot, but he's expected to make a full recovery.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I have always become very attached to my pets. And I had always worried that something bad would happen to them.

You scared me when I read the title; I thought the dog had died and was sad. It's good he's alright! Smile

Well it is good that the driver uf the vehicle had the decency to stop and that your dog will recover. The coughing up blood must have scared the hell out of you. All's well that ends well, even if it is traumatizing.

I can't imagine, watching an animal suffer is hard for me. Sad

I feel extremely fortunate that:

-The dog will be OK.

-I had a friend with me to offer support in various forms.

-The other drama in my life sorted itself out happily and peacefully the next day.

-The dog will be OK.

-The dog will be OK.

Very Happy

I just had to post about it here because it was upsetting, and I had a very strange, eventful weekend. Uh, all's well that ends well!

True to my dog's unique personality, I could tell he was in trouble because he wasn't whining! Usually, he's a whiny, flightly, high-strung dog.

After the accident, he's been acting very mellow, just slowly lumbering around like an old dog. I told the vet that it was a bad sign that he just looked at her and slowly wagged his tail when she entered the room instead of trying to jump on her and lick her face. That was when he started staggering around and coughing up blood. Sad

It is kind of sad to see him sleeping so much, not acting like his usual self, but he does get excited about food and walks - his ears perk up and he wags his tail (normally, he'd leap around, spin in circles, and whine).

And his wounds look better every day! Smile

Glad to see your dog is going to be okay. I can remember the time I accidentally hit my dog when she ran right in front of me. I was very upset and couldn't understand why she did that. My mother told me she thought I would stop. I did slam on my breaks but didn't have enough time even though I was going about 20 miles an hour. But she was okay and her leg was cut deep down and she needed stitches. She never ran close to a car never again.

I'm sorry for all the pain and stress, and relieved your friend did not die.

I hate that he was hit, but glad that it wasn't any worse than it was. I hope for his speedy recovery. Smile

My dogs have very poor car sense. They were both hit and miraculously received no damage. Since then they're a bit more cluey about cars.

Yes, I'm really hoping my dog will be more cautious around cars after this experience. Of course I'm in no hurry to put that idea to the test, though.
