We met today with the autism specialist and speech/language pathologist for two hours. Our son was in the room.
There was no question to them that Nate was Aspergers. The way he played, his speech patterns and areas of interests really made it an easy dx for them. They stated that they won't give him an IQ test because they feel he is in the high average to superior range. I don't care about the IQ test anyways because it doesn't matter in this particular case.
The purpose of the testing is to look at his areas of strengths and weaknesses in the area of language, especially pragmatics (how he uses language). They are giving him the ADOS to sort out the particular areas to work with him on.
He will for sure be getting social skills training with them. They will put him in a group with some other kids who are working on similar issues. They will also work with him one on one with some sensory issues he is having. I think he will receive services at least once a week if not more. Insurance will be covering most of it, thank goodness.
So, my regular physician makes me even more mad. I told the psychologist what the doctor said and he couldn't believe it. Nate doesn't show any signs of ADHD - he just may look like it on some occasions. The clinical psych gave me the same doctors name as the OT (that we still need to see). I guess she has a very good reputation of understanding those on the spectrum.
I am very happy right now!!! My son will get the social skills training and he will with people who understand Autism.
The psychologist explained that being Aspergers is not a bad thing at all. They just think differently and can contribute to society in a wonderful way because of the different way of thinking. They just need a little help in the social skills area just like we all need a little help in areas of our life. He is very PRO Aspergers and thinks of it as a gift. I like that:) He said that their purpose is to help Nate develop his strengths and work on his areas of weaknesses. Hence, the social skills training!
The psych and language therapist both stated that I can now stop being psych and mom and just be the mom!! They stated, "Let us play that role and you play the mom role!" I started to cry at that point. I can finally let the whole psych analyzing go and concentrate on giving me son what he needs!!! |

| Glad you are happy about things. I remembered from last week that you said you were really nervous about the meeting. Hope things are onwards and upwards from here. |

Glad the meeting went so well, it sounds like you have a good group of people there who really have your son's interest at heart! YEAH! Anyway, I 'm very happy for you and your family. Plus, for them to say you can stop being the "psych and just be mom"...seems like they understand all you have been going through, how wonderful! Congrats! _________________ "When life brings you to your knees, you are in a good position to pray!" |
