| good. gun laws are in place that are supposed to stop felons from getting guns. the ones who do get guns, get them illegally and would get them illegally regardless of if it's banned or not...all that banning them does is prevent law-abiding citizens from having them. |

DC's crime rate is already one of the worst in the nation. It could hardly get much worse.
And criminals are already getting their guns outside the city. Furthermore, the WSJ reports that things aren't likely to change de facto anytime soon.

Actually, I doubt it, at least initially. Right now, the city has no federally licensed gun dealers at all, which is largely the result of the ban and very stringent zoning laws, which severely restrict where explosive devices can be sold. Thing is, the powers that be in the District — the mayor, the city council, the police — are still very against the sale of guns, so my guess is they’re going to do everything in their power to restrict it. At this point, I bet they use the zoning laws to keep the stores out. |
Remember folks. Guns don't kill people. Gangs and poverty kill people. Everyone's got a gun in their house in my hometown, and the murder rate's as low as anywhere in the first world. _________________ * here for the nachos. |

Never say things can't get any worse. That is like putting a sign over your groin saying 'here are my testicles. Please kick them.'

Compare your hometown to mine (the Gold Coast, Australia) in terms of murder rate and gun ownership, if you can get the figures.
I agree with your saying that gangs and poverty kill people more than guns, but give a man easy access to guns, and he can take a life far more easily and readily than, say, with a knife. _________________ Those who fight monsters must take care, lest they become them.

you say this under the assumption that guns won't exist if they're made illegal. |

Think about it. How many murders, with guns, are done by ordinary people, as compared to criminal organisations?
And I don't. I say that, given the choice between a knife and a gun, most will go for the gun, as it is easy and dispassionate. A knife needs you to get up close and personal, and with greater risk of physical injury. _________________ Those who fight monsters must take care, lest they become them.

Well, D.C. is a pretty nice place ... if you ignore all the murders. |

how many? i'm under the impression by the news and other media sources that most of the murders are drug related or part of a crime gone wrong or part of some otherwise organized crime.
these aren't people who are going to follow the law and go "oh, let me get a knife to show those f**** who stole my money who's the b***h."
if you're appealing to the common man heat of passion murder...that's the minority of cases and you never legislate for the minority...at least not in cases like that. |

Then look for actual, official statistics. In fact, the majority of murders are committed by friends and family, and I doubt that most of them do it over gangland or drugs stuff. _________________ Those who fight monsters must take care, lest they become them.

Umm, then why is gun violence so much lower in Canada compared to the United States, despite the fact that it's not terribly hard to get an illegal gun smuggled in from the States? _________________ I have seen the truth and it makes no sense. |

what's the difference in poverty levels?
how about organized crimed and gang crime/violence?
unless i'm mistaken on this: canada has much less crime (esp. violent) in general than the US. |
