thanks for that post, Cerumenator. I found it useful, and I'm going to check photo.net now. Street Photography is my hobby.

Generally, people eating tends to be off-limits. There's nothing wrong with taking photos but there's a time and a place to know when to stop. Did you know the people who you were taking photographs of? That might help - if I was with strangers I might feel very uneasy.

I'm an amateur photographer myself. I tend to shy away from photographing people for this very reason. I think I have enough trouble talking to people normally - taking their photo when they know I'm doing it tends to add to extra problems. So I tend to use a flashless P&S if I want to do any low-light shooting.

I asked someone wether to bring my camera to a large group of friends meeting up in a house. In the past it would of been ok to slip my compact in and if I got the right vibe wip it out to take photos.

With my SLR its a little harder to conseel but I didnt take it as adviced. No one had camera only one guy on his phone which he took one photo.
I dicussed it with him, he said that you'll always stand out in a social enviroment with a profesional looking camera there is no way it will ever be like a compact which most people have. He's got a point. It proberly does intidate people. So I've decided to save it for my hobys and requested photoshoots.
I decided instead to start a 365 days project which a poplar thing on flickr where you take a different self portrait every day. Its really challenging me to think quickly and to upload and process my photos quickly. I'm on day 4 now

Its still new so i'm still developing skills ...

Looks like you shoot Canon... Anyway, hard to underestimate the value of LIGHT in photog. Or underestimate the value of going DIGITAL whilst learning to shoot. Some pros used to carry a $3000 Leica 35mm camera around, for the reason beside taking great photos, it just looked so innocent, small, and non-threatening. Most people (that didn't know cameras), when confronted with the diminutive Leica, just went ''awww, that's so cuuute!" Which allowed the shooter to more easily capture a candid shot, the subjects were less likely to freeze up than in the face of a big SLR.

In that vein, and since you already shoot Canon (I think), I suggest you look into the Canon G series. I think they're up to a G9 now, but you can get G1, G2, etc on eBay. Awesome camera for several reasons, but here's the biggest one: it has a hotshoe! That means that unlike 99% of point and shoot digicams on the market, you can attach a Canon speedlight on top for when you want to do some serious shooting. I believe this is the only Canon p/s that is compatible with the speedlights in the same way the Canon SLR's are. With the speedlight off, it looks like just about any other p/s.

Then you can get the nifty Canon ST-E2 transmitter as well and do ALL KINDS of tricks. You put the ST-E2 on the camera, and it controlls the speedlight from anywhere in the room up to 20 feet or so. Imagine the possibilities.... It will calculate the flash exposure perfectly AT THE AREA OF FOCUS. And THAT, friends, IS AWESOME. With that, you can get a pretty darn good studio setup that will fit into a gymbag. Did I mention this is all wireless??

The G also has a regular viewfinder, so you can frame subjects the old fashioned way without looking at the lcd (another trick to help put people at ease, and much quicker so you don't lose 'the moment'.) You can screw off the lens barrel and screw on a 58mm lens hood (most p/s won't let you do that) and allows you to get all the 58mm filters. Sure, you can mimic MOST of the filter effects in photoshop or nik effects, but not all - like the Zeiss Softar filters for example. Software just can't replicate some of the effects that occur AT THE GLASS like Softar or, and this one is a biggie too, Polarization (shooting near water especially).

Anyway, I'm rambling, late, and too much coffee and Marlboros.

Happy shooting!

See, that's funny, because my future sister in law asked me if I was bringing my DSLR to her wedding. I told her I hadn't been planning on it, since it's a pain to travel with, but she wanted me to. I don't know why it would intimidate people...after all, the professional photographer was there as well. Anyway, no one thought it was strange or complained that I had a camera, even a big one.

But then, my photography is usually limited to architecture and nature, so I'm not really taking pictures of people that I don't know.

its different though, that situation is easy coz its a wedding where your involved...like its ur family's wedding if u went to a friend of a friend's wedding would you feel the same?

Also my dad said to me that if people who's wedding it is request you to do it... or like say "hey bring ur good camera along" they mean they have seen your work and like u .. I'm just establishing myself its a different story...thats the pain different rules in different situations..what ur talking about is one of the exceptions.

I'm not sure it is that different, is what I'm saying. I always bring a camera to weddings, just like most people do. My camera just happens to be a bit bulkier than most people's but that doesn't mean it's inappropriate to use it.

I mean, were you really the only person with a camera at that wedding? That's a little odd. It's a celebration...a lot of people are going to have cameras.

no ur rite I wasnt the only one...I just wanted to get all these angles so I was infront of everyone, its been a month i'm doing things difrently now...I think one of the problems is I was infront of everyone crouching on the floor on a chair...not like 2 people "smile for me" and u take a photo like everyone else does.
