I keep reading bad things about Autism Speaks from WP and I'm wondering if anyone here knows or thinks they do any good. _________________ Run or Die |

I think it's good that they're publicizing autism. It may not be the image all of us would like seen in the media, but I think it's better than no image at all.
They're also supposed to have a pretty good list of autism resources available to help families find help in their area. It'd be nice if they'd send some funding to those organizations rather than just publicizing them.
I also think they have good intentions. The problem of helping someone you don't understand is a difficult one. |

am think they do a lot of good, but dont like how its got about some ways [eg,research over support, and parents over autists] and many of as members [whether they are actual members,or just members on AS forum am dont know] have been given some very misleading ideas of what autism is and can be [assumes that there is one fit to classic autism,as etc,and do not understand that its different for each autie and aspie]. _________________ [LFAutie]

I don't find Autism Speaks to be a malevolent organization, just misguided. While they may have the best of intentions... well, I believe there is an old quote that applies here. They bring attention (good), but do so with poor information and a specific agenda (bad); they want a better life for those on the spectrum (good) but do not have those directly affected as part of their organization and leadership (bad) and their goals seem to be more aligned to the benefit of the parents than the children (worse). They focus on the worst cases, and therefore while improving awareness they create a further sense of stigma to those who are on the spectrum but not to the same extent. I do not support Autism Speaks, though I can appreciate the drive that spurs some of them onward. It is just not a viewpoint I can share.

| Well if their leaders didnt all seem to be close minded fools they would probably get something done but they would rather attack autistics poking fun at them... |

The good I can see, they are a recognized organization that is receiving money from the government to do research towards the causes of autism.....and they use it to fund vastly different approaches to this research.... in the end this is actually a good thing.... even if their focus is to eradicate autistics everywhere...
I don't like their focus, I don't agree with them, I don't even agree with their methods of reseach on autistic children, but they are doing the research.
They have put a public eye on the autistic struggle, even if it is based on classic auties, and doesn't really include the broader spectrum. |

Yes! Yes, of course they do good! Why would you think they wouldn't? They do wonderfully! It's because of them that I have a job... in refuting the varied crap they put out about Autism. What the hell, man? Does anyone Autistic work with them? What right do they have to assume they speak for anyone? But, no, it's alright - we're not people, after all. We're diseases! Didn't you know? Autism speaks knows. They know everything. Why, just ask them! They'll tell you that themselves.
Friggin' hippy idiot Autsim speaks. Leave the scientific research to professionals, ya bastards! |

Autism Speaks gets the message out, and that's a good thing. Unfortunately they also get a lot of inaccurate information out, which is a bad thing. They also dehumanize autistics by turning them into statistics and making them seen as burdens, which is a horrible thing.
Do they do some good? Well sure they do, but it's not anywhere near enough to make up for all the bad they do. They are little more than a hate group, which will get people to pay attention. |
