I had poor handwriting/printing from the time I was a kid until I was 18 or so. This really made me embarrassed to write/print anything in front of anyone.
Around 3 years ago I was so sick of having poor writing that I sat down and 'taught' myself to write/print properly. After around 3 hours (!!!) I'd seriously figured out how to write in a different style. This made my writing/printing look a lot more pleasing to the eye. The main thing I was doing 'wrong' in the past was that I wasn't holding my pencil/pen on much of a slant. After realizing that writing on more of a slant enabled me to write neater, I didn't feel paranoid about writing checks, signatures, or anything else around other people any longer.
Now some questions:
. Do you guys think that I wasn't able to write/print neatly because I had that autistic need to stick to routine? (This is my theory, but I can't be 100% sure. I think that when I learned how to print/write I just stuck to my writing technique. I was too used to it to ever want to change it.)
. Have any of you people also had awful writing/printing in the past and were able to 'fix' it like me?

PS. If any of you guys who feel you have awful writing/printing can scan pictures of your writing/printing, I wouldn't mind. |

I've always had horrible writing, and still do, because my fine motor coordination is poor. It's nothing to do with rigidly sticking to routine. I could curl my 'g's up into a fancy loop if I wanted to, but my poor coordination stops my writing from looking like anything more than an unfortunate fight between a termite and a vertically-challenged hippo.

I also have terrible handwriting. I always figured it was poor because I write too fast. Funny, I never really thought about practicing.  Maybe I'll give it a try someday. I think it might just work. If I do try it, I'll scan the before and after results, for comparison.

My handwriting isn't great, but it's still legible.
Does anyone else here 'correct' their handwriting? for example. if a loop in a letter like 'a' or 'o' isn't closed, I'd close it after writing the word. This probably makes my handwriting messy.
Here's a sample image I wrote about 2 years ago for another forum (this sample actually doesn't contain corrections, I probably refrained from using them):

yeah my hand writing is bad, I just print rather than write so my writing easier to read.
I this day and age you use computers for everything so it doesn't matter that much to me. |

| Everyone was really impressed by mine in primary school as I started joining it up in reception and kept it very uniform up until year six-ish, as I believe. At the end of year eight it was going down the hole a bit and I wanted to give it a bit of a flair, with things such as descendant n's, m's, h's, s's and what have you. It went on to more or less improve from that until now; people have always commented on its individuality and attractiveness, my guitar teacher calling it "musician's handwriting", and it reached something of a pinnacle several months ago, with everything before it seeming cringeworthy. I'd describe it as an almost graffiti-like style with feminine handwriting qualities. It's currently in transition between that and a more cursive, italic classical style at the moment. |

I can not, to this day, do cursive writing. I did however spend hours and hours making my hand writing legible. But I get cramps and it is not natural and I can write, at most, about 100 words before I have to stop.
I was much rejoiced when I received my first typewriter (and later a keyboard and computer.) I can not type faster than my mother (who was at one stage a typist receptionist) and I very rarely make a mistake. |

terrible handwriting...
I took typing in high school, to meet girls... (seriously...back then most typing jobs were for secretarys, which predated admins... Met girls, got nowhere, but still could touch type...
Then the age of computers. All I ever do with pens are short notes, and my signature.
Unless it meant that I was destined to be a pharmacist... |

My handwriting... well, it depends on the observer I suppose. Either it is illegible, or it is found fascinating... I have six common ways to make an 'f' depending on the placement in a paragraph, sentence, word, and adjacent letters. Some letters have a cursive styling, but my handwriting is predominantly print. During a handwritten letter, the angle and shift of my letters will change with my mood and subject; sometimes wider, sometimes tilted oddly to either angle, always with a distinct 'floor' to my line-of-writing. It is a composer's hand, more an impression than well-defined script.

My handwriting is sloppy, my cursive is downright illegible.
I can write very neat if I try, but it takes me probably 75% longer to do it. Also takes me longer to do cursive than print, because I have to focus harder on how many humps and loops things get.

I can't even print very well, mostly because I print/write fast, I try to write as I think, and thus I write fast to catch up with my thoughs...
.....if that made any sense.

My hand writing has never been good especially when I was a kid. My cursive is better than my printing. I can make it somewhat neater if I write real slow. I prefere ballpoint pens or pencils. I don't like writing with felt pens/markers....messier and I can't stand it!
I am ambidextrous and can write with either hand. I have allways been this way... though....both sloppy, but right handed no slant, left handed slants to the right at the top, but form the letters the same way. |
