it was an interesting doco, it talked about the links between Marn Grook and AFL. did not say it was based on it just talked about the links.
it was also interesting to hear the stories of how highly people thought of the game eg.
there were stories of blind children going to the games with radios in their ears tuned to the games and cheering along with everyone else.
the feeling of belonging people feel when it comes to football.....
do u keep track of the modern game as well as the history? |
The link between Marn Grook and Australian rules was just a myth because the aboriginals claimed to be the original inhabitants. Though both games may be similar, Australian rules was actually a derivation of Irish Gaelic football. The original field at Gosh's paddock was 2 miles long, and in the Scotch College v Melbourne Grammar game, 40 per side were used. The game went for three weeks, as scoring was difficult. The reason Australian rules was invented was to give the cricketers something to do in the winter months. Very few play now.

This is also a quaint myth. The founders of Australian football had no knowledge at all of Gaelic football. In fact Australian football was codified years before the Gaelic game. |

apparently it is the oldest code (someone told me that)
Anyway if anyone ever ends up in melbourne and is interested in the history of the game you should checked out the australian sporting mueseam at the MCG. it has a big section of the history of afl. |

| I'm not a big AFL fan but I go for the Swannies and I think Barry Hall would have a good career in Boxing |

You are not kidding there; two TKOs that West Coat and Collingwood could swear to. Luckily Wakelin got up.
BTW, I have a collection of nearly 50 Australian Rules Jerseys; some country Victoria, some metro and at least one SANFL. Also a couple of heritage style AFL ones. _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it.

you do? cool.
as for barry, he would make a good boxer. The reason Wakelin got up is because the punch didn't connect.
you see it in the footage it misses wakelin. |

I don't know much about it, but I've heard about it and I would like to know more. Australia is one of my interests. I hope to go there one day, maybe even to relocate permanently, so I'm trying to learn as much about it as possible. Right now I'm getting a good foundation with a huge book about its history, and an interest in music in certain genres, and random facts and some "cultural indoctrination" as I'll put it.
I've already decided to start using the word "football" to refer to what people in my country call "soccer", just to deny the existence of American football, which I despise. Other countries have better sports. |

cool....If you end up down here you should check out a game, it is one of the traditional places people take friends from overseas and local areas.
eg we had a couple of japanese exchange students stay over and we took them to a couple of AFL games. My dad has a membership with the western bulldogs and he goes to games sometimes with his friends , he took me a couple of times. |
