Title says it all; the only music I can sort of claim to listen to is classical, but even then I don't listen to it very often. In grade school and most of college, I never specifically listened to music on my own (i.e. TV/movies/games have music, so I listened to those by default; of course the intent was to enjoy the TV/movie/game). The only reason I listened to music in college was I had to go to a few classical concerts for a class. Supposedly, music is somehow "part of our culture", but I don't really see why it is to the degree it is or why it is really so important for some people (i.e. those who spend hundreds of dollars following around their favorite band to listen to them in concert). Apparently, it is also shocking and horrifying to people when they learn someone else cannot name a song/identity the music from all these "famous bands" (i.e. Elvis, the Beetles, Jackson, etc). Historical events would seem to have a greater impact on our present cultural than music, but it seems to be acceptable to remain ignorant on that subject. I figure one the reasons for this lack of interest is because I tend to always be thinking, so I have no need for music (since other people seem to hate silence in their minds; one of my coworkers claims to "always have a song in his head"). Anyone else like this/have any ideas on this subject?

I'm the same way. I just never got into the music culture. I pretty much know zip about popular music.
I do listen to some music though, but only stuff from games and movies, soundtrack type stuff.

That's really sad. My Mother is kind of like that - little interest in music. I'm sorry you don't get it, but I can tell you that you're missing something beautiful. Music can be moving, enriching and very fulfilling. It's sort of a dimensional reality in itself. I wish I could explain in a way that would make sense, but I guess it would be like describing colors to the blind. No offense - I'm sort of the same way about mathematics - I know to those who 'get it', it's beautiful in it's complexity and says things to them that I will never be able to appreciate.

But it's quite possible to have a deep and abiding love (even obsession) for music and still be well educated in many other fields of study.

I personally quite enjoy music, and listen when I can. Songs for me evoke emotions and help me run my stories that I go through in my head.

I, however, rarely remember the name of the song or the artist unless I truely love that particular song (and played it all day one day...). As for it being a huge part of our culture, it is only that because people care about it so much. Same with TV shows and sports, its a thing you either get or you don't. I guess I'm on the fringes of "getting it" because I don't care enough about to pay mass amounts of money (or spend mass amount of time), but I find it helps alot to get the mind in gear.

I was the same way for a long time. Never had much interest in what other people listened to. Only recently I found an interest in music. I'm picky though in my taste.

I didn't listen to music until about three years ago. Until then I didn't know about any music I'd end up liking. XD

For a lot of people, music is moving. It can make you want to dance, it can make you want to get into the mosh pit, it can make you sing along with the song as loud as you can. It ejects and affects emotion in people. It changes how people feel when they are into the music. It just has that affect on them

In some cases though, people don't get the same effect from music as most people do. They might find music boring and/or they may not understand how it could have such an effect on people. It doesn't mean that something is wrong with ya, it's just the way some people's brains work.

Personally, I have a muscly inclined brain. I learn best from music and I relate to it more. I love making music, just as much as I love listening to it.

I don't think I could survive without music, it is a safe outlet for my emotions I have been obsessed with it since I was a small child.
