This is horrible 
Thankfully things were different at my school back in the day. The special ed students had thier photo in amongst everyone elses in our "school magazine". The special ed faculty even had a couple of pages showcasing the students and thier goings on.
(Just to be sure, I'm going to hunt down my 2001 school magazine and make sure all the students were in it)

I find it hard to believe that it was an innocent mistake. I could understand if it only happened to a couple of kids, but how would the accidentally leave out all of the special needs children?
Maybe they think they are unworthy or less human. It is disgusting and I don't imagine the kids appreciate this exclusion. Those kids who are different have a hard enough time with their peers, they don't need this from the adults who run the school. |

Given some of the experiences I've had with autistic people, they probably are, but that's no reason to leave them out of the yearbook. |

You don't know that. And everyone who thinks they deserve more rights than everyone else bitches about their peers and how their peers are "being so mean to me, wah wah wah" when their peers are usually just calling them on their disgusting socially unacceptable public behaviours. |

I wonder how many schools are going to use that card to try to rationalize their myopia and hard-heartiness? So much for "valuing the intrinisic value of each and every individual" (a phrase from my school's mission statement)

This is more then a yearbook picture. It symbolizes how we are consistently mistreated for being different and not allowed to be ourselves |

That's not right as, all stundents regardless should have their representation in the yearbook including Autistic students.. personally, I was one of few Aspies in my high-school yearbook for there was not many Aspies in my High School..

Well, if it was simply a class page, a couple pages in a row where the pictures were missing, it could been a mistake on the part of the layout people, as careless as that was of them to do so. However, if other representations of the special needs students were left out of the book, I would wonder about the school's aims and intentions in doing so.
Yupa, correcting socially inappropriate behaviors is NEVER an excuse for bullying or harassment. That's for parents, psychologists and teachers to do, preferably in a guiding way that actually gives them acceptable alternative behaviors rather than more trauma and resentment towards people, which is what bullying can often lead to. Anyone who claims that they were mistreating their classmate to correct their behaviors, especially in the first and second grade, is probably making excuses for merely wanting to put others down in order to bring themselves up. Finally, I have to wonder why you're posting on this forum if you believe from your experiences with autistic people that they are quite possibly "unworthy or less human." |
