Categorically untrue. Not once does Colin Farrel appear in it, therefore it cannot be the worst movie ever

erm, yes. They changed the name to Iran in 1935

I dunno, maybe I'm just biased because we had a bigger empire and if we act proud of it, we get into trouble.

well, the British did well....be pretty bad (see the African Campaigns, Indian Massacres, Carving China out, etc.) Granted, the other European powers were doing that with China and Africa...

Fiction gets on well with stereotyping. Look at the Nazis in the Indy films. Are we seriously going to believe that all nazis were steel-rimmed-glasses-wearing, gloating and hand-rubbing-laughing evil types in trenchcoats? No. We know better, but allow for suspension of disbelief.

More like the demonization of everything nazi-related and left-overs of propaganda from WWII. Many of the Hollywood people at the time were Jewish and didn't let them off either.

I'll say it again.. in the context of the film/book, the Persians ARE evil hordes bent on world domination.

Besides, its not as if they are all innocent. They did build a huge empire by invading other countries, which is hardly very sociable behaviour, and they did field hordes of poorly trained peasant levies en masse who got slaughtered by the villageload. Are we sure they arent just complaining because this film caught them out?

Sparta was a militaristic dictatorship and we hear them shouting FREEDOM!!!! (ignoring all the slaves they had lol)

EDIT: well it was 'freedom' I admit from Persian Influence

anyway about the Persian Empire

Quote:

In 559 BC, Cyrus became the chief of an obscure Persian tribe in the south of Persia. A devoted Zoroastrianism, he believed that his religious duty was to bring about the eschatological promises of Zoroastrianism through active warfare. If the universe was an epic struggle between the forces of Ahura-Mazda and the forces of evil, Cyrus his job as personally bringing about the victory of his god. As an extension of this, Cyrus would bring Zoroastrianism to all the peoples he conquered; he would not force them to become Zoroastrian, though. For Zoroastrianism recognized that all the gods worshipped by other peoples were really gods; some were underlings of Ahura-Mazda and some were servants of Ahriman. Cyrus saw as his mission the tearing down of religions for evil gods and the shoring up of religions of gods allied with Ahura-Mazda.

Religious Plurality was accepted in the Persian Empire. The Kings somewhat listened to the people. When Cyrus invaded other nation he did not destroy their religious structures but allowed them. Heck, he freed all the slaved in Baghdad when he took over it.

Quote:
Cyrus is also important in Jewish history because of his liberal religious policies. In 587BC Nebuchadnezzar, the king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, had attacked Jerusalem, destroyed the temple and taken a large number of Hebrew citizens into slavery in Babylonia (2 Chronicles 36.17-23). Cyrus allowed the Jews to return to Israel, ordered them to rebuild the temple, and even gave them back the temple treasure which had been stolen (Ezra 1.1-11). Cyrus, like Alexander the Great who eventually took over the Persian Empire, seems to have had a policy of keeping all gods sweet, just in case.

EDIT: Moar

Quote:
Cyrus' first military conquest was of Media in 550 B.C. One of his first acts was to do away with the draconian tradition that would have had him raze the city and murder its citizens enmasse.

Cyrus appointed a Mede as chief adviser and then ruled the kingdom in a kind of dual monarchy, with both Medes and Persians holding high offices. The satrapy, as this system of government became known, put a native Mede in power as a semiautonomous ruler, or satrap.

Cyrus instituted certain checks, though. Foe example, several of the satrap's underlings reported directly to Cyrus.

"Nevertheless, the close relationship between Persians and Medes was never forgotten. Medes were honored equally with Persians; they were employed in high office and were chosen to lead Persian armies," wrote A.T. Olmstead in his "History of the Persian Empire."

From Media, Cyrus went on to conquer the western land of Lydia and several Greek states on the Aegean Sea. He then turned east, taking the ancient kingdom of Drangiana, Arachosia, Margiana and Bactria. He converted most into satrapies
and put natives in command.

He also showed great respect for conquered peoples' religious and cultural beliefs. At that time, every tribe or kingdom had its own gods and rites.

While it was customary for conquerors to deface the idols and religious statues of those they defeated, Cyrus forbade that practice. When it did occur, he quickly remedied it.

this link is arguably biased I admit. I mean, IIRC the UK practiced different patterns of governorship.

http://www.farsinet.com/cyrus/cyrus_just_ruler.html

Let's compare this to what the UK did

One of the best generals the UKS had, Charles James Napier said this

"The best way to quiet a country is a good thrashing, followed by great kindness afterwards. Even the wildest chaps are thus tamed"

"the human mind is never better disposed to gratitude and attachment than when softened by fear"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_James_Napier

which would you prefer

also, On the other hand, the Persian Empire is older than the British Empire so that might also factor in

so Confused

But I do have to enjoy the movie, seriously. SPARTAAAAAAAA

well, on the other side, you'd probably give the producers heart failure if they knew that the real Spartans were encouraged to follow a gay life style (companions), and women were virtually kept in purdah, and mainly considered breeders. Also, the reason they could field the soldiers they did is that it was a slave economy, so they needed to 'keep 'em down on the farm'.

I've seen very few anti-American movies (don't remember the name of one, but Walker was the other one, about an American who conquered Nicaragua in the 19th Century), the other some sort of spy movie where a right winger attacks Russia with tanker trucks, which are sunk in the ice-covered ocean...Wink I know there's got to be more out there, but unfortunately I don't speak any of the other 3.999 languages to be able to understand them..Wink
