AFI sound like the Misfits, at least the albums I have (Art of Drowning and Black Sails). They're not too bad actually.

ive had plenty of time to analyze MCR for anything complicated, and none of it was more complicated than my school orchestra pieces in 7th grade

Yes. But compare that to Fall Out Boy. Or even, supposedly great artists like Bob Dylan or The Beatles. MCR aren't just the same old pop-punk act. Quite apart from which, I said multi-segmented and dynamicalyl varied, which doesn't necessarily need any more musical talent, just ambition. Shredding, however, which I also mentioned, does.

AFI were hardcore, but they're poppier and more post-hardcore now.
Atreyu are post-hardcore/metal.
Avenged Sevenfold are trickier because they tend to weld shred and pop-punk together.
Goldfinger are mostly pop-punk too, honestly.
The Used are what is now known as 'emo.'
Yellowcard are just pop-punk with a violin (not that I don't love them, cause I do).

Seeing it literally, emo stands for emotional (as people already stated here)
and one could split the so called emo into waves and such (wich people already did here also)

now, thinking not of meaning, not of waves, not of style, what's with people and the need to carve their likes / dislikes into others ?

one can just come in here and say "i like this" or "i dislike that" but things such "this is the best there is and none of your crappy bands can hold a candle to it" or saying "this sucks and all you who like it can go to hell" is just plain stupid.

any music that talks about emotions is emo

accept that or not, i'm cool with it, anyways, one could then classify them songs, depending on how deep they meddle in emotions, and so on

Aha, yes. All music is indeed emotional, but you see, the Emo genre is a legitimate genre, a fork off of hardcore punk. I've never quite understood the term either. It's essentailly as meaningless as "alternative rock" (when you sell 10 million copies, what are you alternative too?) or "new wave" (a genre that could include both Pornography-era Cure and early Madonna, without including another meaningless genre, "post-punk") or "indie rock" (which does have a discernible sound, but I think you need to call it something different as soon as most of the bands are snapped up by major labels)

I've noticed that people often tend to classify music by stage clothes, even Alice Cooper and W.A.S.P., and KISS (certainly!) were classified as "gothic" music... Where the hell did they find anything "gothic" in Blackie's lyrics??? He always says what he thinks, and it's as close to "gothic" as to new age or ritual Dzen-Buddhism hymns!
Ah, yeah, well, the make-up... But it's just a MAKE-UP, not a POINT OF VIEW!
And now - if you have emotions in your music, then you're an emo? Shocked But music is created by emotions, otherwise it's not music, but making money.
All I can see is absolute incomprehension of music, and it's a great pity.

AFI's more recent stuff is actually pretty vastly different. They kind of verged into more alternative-rock territory after The Art of Drowning, kind of like a more energetic and punky sounding version of Mellon Collie era Smashing Pumpkins, in that the level of production is huge, with very layered guitars, lots of sampling, orchestral flourishes and electronic touches.
If you can, pick up Sing the Sorrow. It's an absolute masterpiece IMO.

This is a great example of actual emo. I don't see how MCR is even in their league. I really don't.

so did husker Du, The replacements, Fugazi and superchunk are alternative rock bands that influenced mid 90's emo

Thankyou for bringing out the obscurity of obviousness on this subject. Wink

I agree with most posters. Emo and Screamo, is punk with no energy.

Drive Like Jehu, would they be classed as Emo? Because I think they're ok.

Apart from that it's all just trash.

I mean, why do ALL songs these days have to be about love anyway? Neutral

Drive Like Jehu are a Noise rock band that influenced emo and screamo band
also Unwound are also noise rock

I have never really been that sure what Emo is officially, just looked it up on Wikipedia and it turns out that some awesome bands are considered Emo.

For example I love-

The Get Up Kids

At the Drive In

Jimmy Eat World

Texas is the Reason (Excuse the poor sound on the filming)

The Promise Ring

I am not ashamed. These bands all have awesome tunes which speak for themselves.

those are great bands

The Cure rode in on the horse known as post-punk, but they move all over. They've been outright pop on numerous occasions, like 'Friday I'm In Love' or 'Boys Don't Cry.'

Indeed. I do catagorize them as "alternative". Along with bands like XTC, Squeeze, Gang of Four, The Jam and Joy Division, The Cure created the sound that would later become alternative rock later in the 1980s.

You really actually can't catagorize The Cure. In one year (1982) they recorded a dour depressing album (Pornography) and at the end of the year released the superhappy single "Let's Go to Bed".

I Hates it!!

Every time I hear it I hurl and involuntary "F***ing Whiners", and turn it off.

(Ducks head and cringes, waiting for indignant teenage salvo.) Smile

I can see the appeal for the angst ridden. But it really drives me bonkers. I guess I'm just too old. Laughing

Oooh, could you diagnose a band for me?

30 Seconds to Mars is not emo but what are they and why do I like them so much?

This is the vid that everyone says is so emo.

But their other contributions (esp. the first album) don't seem so ya know. They're too deep for it.

Their lyrics are pretty golden in my honest opinion. Please don't bash me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
