How to overcome simple fear?
All my life I've had fear. Fear of progress, fear of trying new things. I was held back in 5th grade because I was afraid of junior high. I thought the kids were so much bigger than me and they would beat me up.
Are there any techniques that you know of to make yourself a little more brave and "take life by the horns"? _________________ Is a pith hat made of pith or head-ware of some importance? |

I have a great many irrational and rational fears. I have frequent panic attacks, or anxiety attacks when faced with uncertainty or things that frighten me.
So far, I've found that it is rather hard to fight fear head on.
Just "Wish it away".
What I do, is I distract myself. The best cure for fear is loud, calming music, and my favorite drink.
Grape juice.
I'm not sure if its the normal "happy" reaction to food, or something in the actual grape juice that does it, but a bottle of grape juice is one of the few things that calms me down when I'm in a full blown fear fit.
(Reference - The "happy" reaction I'm talking about is the release of various chemicals in the brain. It happens any time you exercise or eat, and is your bodies way of rewarding "Good" Behaviors.)
Um... Breathing techniques.
"Square breathing."
It distracts me from being afraid if I'm counting my breaths.
In for four. Hold for four. Out for four. Repeat.
Plus the even supply of oxygen is a nice perk for the brain.
Fiddling with something in my pocket has helped me with public problems before.
If I'm terrorfied about facing my friends, I put a favorite trinket in my pocket, and fiddle with it while I'm talking to them.
...
Then too, there are ways to try and wish it away.
If I'm by myself, I'll just start talking to myself.
Sometimes randomly, to get rid of the scared thoughts.
Or something about the actual thing thats scary, rationalizing to myself that its not what I think it is.
"No, that shadow is not a monster. Monsters do not exist. And even if they did, they would not sneak into your house. They would break in. You would have heard it. Then too, it would be moving. It would have attacked you by now. And why would it be standing in your living room? Monsters have better things to do, like be in movies."
And then I'd try to laugh at the joke about movies, and find a light switch.
Or, when I'm having trouble sleeping because I'm worried, there is always techniques of hypnosis.
Tricking your mind into thinking one thing.
I like to try to picture calming places, then formulate some sort of action to go with it.
For example, a huge pool of pretty blue water.
And then I'm swimming in it.
Hope that helps? |

You could see a therapist I guess. They might have some techniques that will help you out. _________________

Stop thinking too much. The more you think the more you want to reason against over coming it.
Don't think about it, just do it. Works for me - most of the time when socialising |

^ I was going to say something similar. Things that I fear rarely turn out as bad as I think they might. But the more you think about it, the worse the fear will become. _________________ RAWR!!! |

I suppose while I'm going around quoting Star Wars lines, I should heed Master Yoda's warning:
Fear leads to anger
Anger leads to hate
Hate leads to suffering _________________ Is a pith hat made of pith or head-ware of some importance? |

I get encouragement from thinking about all the brave things my favorite anime characters do.
... Pretty dorky, I know. But at least it works... |

Awesome advice.
I socialized quite well at an old job. Wondered why, and after some thought found that it was mostly because of the many "distractions" that kept me from thinking about the actual socialization. Noticed this as I got a ride from a coworker one day, was a pretty silent ride, as I was worried about what to say, or how to say what I wanted to say, but at work there was NO problem, and people even thought we were a couple. How wierd. _________________ Still grateful.

| What I don't need to do and therefore can avoid, I avoid. The fears I can't avoid I just think of why I can't avoid them and get through it as quickly as I can with a goal in mind. |

One way to handle fear, face it head on. If i am afraid of something
i do that thing/seek out the problem until i am afraid no more. Theres
nothing to fear but fear itself. I know, its old news, but it`s true.
If something scares you, say loud and clear to yourself "I am not
afraid of you!" and say it so you belive it - thats the whole thing, you
decide what scares you, no one else.
edit--
i forgot, it will not be easy, dont ge me wrong. But it will work!
You will be more free, fear is a fence holding you back, break
that crappy fence down and burry it. Fear is such a random and
relative thing, one mans wet dream might be another mans worst
nightmare, so theres little logic to it, just another human emotion
(naturally hardwired into us to survive/avoid death) |

If you can get over this one word, the one word that makes men run away screaming, and that work is "Commitment"
