Ok, excuse the topic, but I have been noticing over the last while that my AS son has quite stinky flatulence. I was trying to work out why it seemed so constant (yay!), and figured it might be the fish oil omega-3 capsules he's been on for awhile. I did a search on Google and, sure enough, it came up with articles like, "Fish Oil and Flatulence" . So, I was just wondering if any others have got their kids on Fish Oil, and have similar problems. Any solutions would be helpful - I did read that if it was pure fish oil, it might improve things. As you can imagine, when you already have social issues to deal with in making friends, we don't need an extra thing putting people off IYKWIM. Fish oil is recommended for people with AS, so I would like to stick with it, but possibly with a less stinkier version. The capsules we currently have are chewable, which is why I got them.

It helps digestion if you eat the oil with the rest of the fish. Really!

And also if it is fresh/not over-heated. There is a brand of tinned sardine that I do not use anymore because it is over-cooked and less digestible.

Some people are also sensitive to some substance, ( a histamine or some other protein, tyrosine? can't remember which ), in oily fish.

My son and I both like, and digest, tinned mackerel in a variety of sauces; mustard, etc .

So, do you mean that it's better just to eat fish than bother with capsules? And, if so, do you eat it every day, or what?

If you are not intolerant of this particular protein, yes, it is better to eat the whole fish.

We eat oily fish, generally a tinned kind, ( tuna and mackerel, mostly, and occasionally sardine but that has to be fresh/lightly cooked otherwise that does not digest well at all, and anchovies with salad can be good ), two or three times a week on average. And I am moving towards eating it more often. It does seem to agree with us.

Hi there,

I use fish-oil for over a year now and I find no real difference concerning flatulence. Not farting more or something. It could be thou that the odeur-bouquet, haha, changes a bit. mmmm.

Please, don't stop giving your son the supplements 'cos I really, really think they're good for everybody but especially for those on the spectrum.

There are fish-oil supp's with added 'Borago officinalis' -oil, (sorry, don't know the English name used). Which supplies extra vitamine E and omega 6 and gives one some extra courage, it's said, as well. Which could be helpful.

Best of luck,
C.

My sons take fish oil in liquid form. It tastes like oranges, because it has orange oil and rosemary extract in it. No flatulence or yucky "fish burps" after taking it. So maybe a different variety would help.

I agree with Ouinon that actually eating oily fish several times a week (although you then have to worry about mercury and other toxins, but less so with the smaller fish) is best if possible.

Disagree. It helps but its a slow process. I have noticed a difference in my children and they have taken the fish oils for about a year :)

Hi there,

You know Protossx, it's really doesn't matter what you think, dude. What do you want, man? I haven't seen many constructive threads or posts from you. All you're doing is being a big nuisance.
Cool. I know it, being one myself for years and years. But I not gonna be that way here on the Planet 'cos it make no sense. I want to sympathize, trying to understand myself and others here and maybe help a little if I can. Even how limited my ability for such.(?)

But hey, do what you want to and see if I care.

Best of luck to you, man,
C.

ProtossX, the fish oil doesnt fix autism, it just helps with indigestion.
Most people with autism have a sensitive gut. I know that I get indigestion several times a week. Alot of things will make me feel sick; fried food, spicy food, food to early in the morning, food to late at night, etc. And as anybody will tell you, when you feel sick, you are often more irritable. So, if you can make the pain from indigestion go away, then the child will be less irritable and stressed out.

Fish oils, and B12 supplements wont cure autism, but they will help to reduce overloads and other problems because the child is in less pain.

My son takes Lil Critters Omega-3 Gummy Fish (available at Costco).
It is not from fish, so it doesn't give him fishy burps/farts.

"Borage." The seed oil contains a lot of Gamma-linolenic acid, an omega 6. I don't think the leaf and flower have that stuff, but it's pretty and easy to grow.

My son takes Coromega every day, and my husband and I both take fish oil pills - can't remember the brand. It's never made him smell funky, and I haven't noticed any increase in gas or anything. We did go through six or seven different kinds to find one that agreed with him though. The first couple gave him nasty smelling poops, and the others just tasted so gross he wouldn't touch them.

It doesn't matter whether they "fix" autism or not - they're just good for you! Fish oils are good for digestion and for brain development and probably a lot of other things, so you don't have to have a special reason to take them.

s**t, I should have said that way earlier. Or emphasize that a healthy diet is the base. I feel a bit stupid 'cos that's way more important, of course. Good food.

A nice prepaired fishmeal or a meal with schrimps o.s.. That increases your omega 3 intake. Or on another day make a salad with lettuce, unions, tomatoes, other good stuff and borage. Maybe. Suit yourself.

Supplements won't cure autsim. I never said that. It helps a little.

Best of luck,
C.

Is borage part of a supplement or an herb? I've heard the name before but never tried to find out. I need to get an omega 6 supplement into my son's diet, but it's not easy finding things a 3 yr old will take!

Borage is a herb and it won't cure autism. Google it.. And fish-oil too.
And see what others think of it.

Again best of luck,
