I get the feeling most here are looking for help and support for our Aspie kids, but parenting is parenting and most of us are getting to know how it works. Go ahead and try and then see what type of replies you get.

You don't have to be an Aspie to pull out your hair over parenting issues - each kid is different, unique and a whole handful of issues.

welcome ! my husband, parts, posts on the parents site periodically...i don't see why you wouldn't be able to. everyone is pretty understanding, and tries hard to be supportive~ lord knows we could use an understanding person Wink

Hi April. My wife (mommyofone) is NT and I am an Aspie (also working on my first novel, wish my closet was big enough to write in). Our daughter (also Aspie) is 4 1/2.

wow, i didn't know you two were married. that's kind of nice you can both be here.

too bad your closet isn't big enough--can you forge a spot somewhere else in the house? what's your novel about?

April,

I read your post all I can say is wow!

Was Benjamin ever tested for AS. You mentioned that your daughter has ADD. You do have your hands full. I admire you that you can homeschool 2 teenagers. I always wanted to homeschool but I knew my personality and ds would definitely not mix. But I know about the educational system they just pass them through whether or not they have learned anything, its sad.

benjamin doesn't have AS. he doesn't have any social problems and can't even begin to understand what i struggle with. i think if he were in ps, they probably would have had him labeled with something like oppositional defiant or something along that line. i don't know if there's a label or not for him--to me he's always been a stubborn, strong-willed child.

he's doing his school now without any of the bulls***. yesterday he was okay but still a little mad. today he sat down and other than asking me a couple of times if he could go to the kitchen or to his room to school (which i said no to), he did his school no problem.

Hi April...
I too was hesitant to post in the parents forum, as I have AS as well...even though my kids are on the spectrum.. Don't ask why...?
But I am sure that you will have some good parenting questions, as well as have the ability to help those on here who aren't on the spectrum understand their children.

I've been getting caught up on the background from your "Haven" posts, and it sounds to me like Benjamin is basically a good kid going through puberty and p***ed off at his dad. It looks to me like whenever dad isn't around or is out of action, Benjamin steps up. One suggestion I might have, and this is coming from someone who hasn't dealt with teenagers yet so feel free to toss it in the trash. My brother (he's NT if it matters) was very arguementative. If my parents tried to call him out on something, he would turn it around and all of a sudden they were having to prove he was wrong or broke the rule and if they couldn't he got off scotfree. I always thought a better way of handling it would have been to just say "I don't believe you were doing your homework, so you're grounded end of story." The important caveat, which my folks would have never gone for, is that if you later find out you were wrong you must admit it to them and apologize. The only way for an Aspie to win an arguement with an NT is to not play, we're too easily manipulated.

Keep fighting. I'm praying for you. Very Happy

yeah, he is a good kid and a lot has fallen on him that shouldn't. we are below the poverty line and plus steve is no longer physically able to do things, so when things go wrong, benjamin normally takes care of it. either steve talks him through it, or he just figures it out, or if push comes to shove benjamin has the connections now to get someone to help for little or no cost (all the farmers and their families in the area).

and yes, benjamin does try to always argue his way out of it. he keeps on and on and on trying to find excuses. i try not to let him get away with that. i guess i probably spend too much time telling him why his excuses don't fly.

all the stress we're under just doesn't help any. we're all under strain.

even though he's grounded, the kids had already planned to go away for the weekend. i went ahead and let benjamin go--i think he needs it. it's a get together with a bunch of kids from church camp. hopefully he'll come back feeling a little bit better.
