Regardless of what Doctuh Phil says, there is literature on video game addiction on PubMed. 58 papers worth. I'll list one.

Grusser et al (2007), 'Excessive computer game playing: evidence for addiction and aggression?', Cyberpsychology and Behaviour, vol. 10, no. 2, pp. 290-292

The abstract claims that 11.9% of 840 players surveyed (with an online questionnaire) actually fulfill the diagnostic criteria of addictive behaviour.

Nah, I just think he's an ass in general.
I hate his semi-hypnotic "you can trust me" voice.
He's not even a real doctor anyway, just another ploy to make you think you can trust him.

A very accurate description indeed.

First of all, I am a serious gamer, but at least I know when to quit. The video game "addicts" that Mr. Phil refers to are addicted not to any fault of the game, but because of their own lack of discipline. If video games were meant to have us play an entire game in one sitting, we wouldn't have things such as console hard drives and external memory cards. In every game I have seen there is some kind of "Save" function. The "addicts" just refuse to use it.

Secondy, anything Mr. Phil says has a tendency to make me believe the opposite, seeing as he's more of a quack than the Aflac duck. This is why I call him Mr. Phil, since anyone who fakes a doctorate to be successful does not deserve the title of "Dr."

sometimes i think people who get up in arms about game-addictions are just confusing excessive boredom with an addiction... but thats just me.

some people cant help it if they dont have a job yet (thats concerning people around my age and younger. bit tougher to get a job and not as much of a need for one.) some people cant help it if they dont have a car (also concerning my age group) and some people cant help it if theres nothing interesting going on in the outside world, nor can some people help it if tv is boring as f**k. what if youve read all the books that interest you that you can get a hold of? its at least a little bit more constructive to play a video game than to stare at a wall....

just my thoughts.

Some people are game addicts, but what about social addicts? Maybe he should do a show on that. I think they're both harmless anyways. I think I'm a video game addict, but I get "addicted" to things easily. It's no different than reading all the time. It's just an effective escape from reality.

Sure, it's harmful if you play all day every day, but a few hours every now and then? Hardly addiction.

Interesting

As a gamer this seems surprising to say the least. I am somewhat social though I have to work on them (game playing has strategy guides socializing...none exist yet care to create one?)

I used to play all day every day back in middle school. Then again, no one would talk to me in real life back then, so I think that had something to do with it.... Now I hardly ever play video games. Every once in awhile I get on a kick where I start playing a lot for like a week, but then I lose interest again. Video games just can't hold my interest like they used to. I think that's a good thing for the most part though.

I think the biggest problem is people don't understand other's values. Some people consider a night playing WoW a good time, others think going out and smoking a bag of meth is a good time. The question is, which one of these 'addictions' are harming anybody? Not rocket science. Video game addiction isn't a real problem, some people find videogames to be their source of ideal entertainment, and they are having some sort of social interaction if its online. If they don't see themselves comfortably living a life as the majority does, but they aren't harming anybody, are still working jobs, paying bills and eating healthy, I fail to see the problem. Maybe it is an addiction, but then again, everybody is addicted to something

Like water.
Withdrawal from water can be pretty bad.
