Not sure when tonight's episode will be available online, but Mary McDonnell played a heart surgeon with Asperger's Syndrome: http://abc.go.com/primetime/greysanatomy/index?pn=index
I think it's good that Asperger's is gaining enough awareness that it is showing up on the big, prime time TV shows. The character (Dr. Virginia Dixon) mentions it at the very end, to which another character briefly describes what it is. |

Yep, good news. That stuff is watched by many people.
I remember we had some minor scandal in germany back in the 80s, when in some cheap soap opera the first kiss of a gay couple appeared on screen. But it started a discussion which in the outcome was very positive.
And Aspies make great soap opera characters I think
My whole life seems to be a big soap opera with all those small misunderstandings based on wrong communication. Not to mention the permanent tragedy of finding a girl friend. Great material... _________________

I don't even like Grey's Anatomy, but that sounds intriguing. _________________ I wandered all night, I wondered all night about you

I had pegged her as an Aspie soon after she appeared on camera. After I mentioned it, at about the 40-minute mark, my wife gave me her general "you see Asperger's everywhere" look, but when it came up at the end, I didn't say a word... |

| The character was (like everything else on the show) a pathetic caricature and she didn't do very much to futher awareness. She played it like and emo Rain Man -- it was all about encyclopedic memory and pissiness. |

| I watched the episode simply because they were including someone with AS on the show. I wouldn't watch it normally. That being said, I was a bit disappointed with the portrayal of her character. I suppose they needed to go with a more "standard" and easily understood version of someone with AS, but it seemed a bit overdone. Not everyone with AS is so "Rain Man" in their symptoms. I'll be interested to see what they do with the character since she's only slated for three episodes but at least the word is getting out there. |

I just watched the program. Seems like the portrayal was an extreme stereotype. I know they have to get the point across in short order but is this the sort of characterization aspies want to see on TV? Dr. Dixon said her only interest was the heart. It doesn't seem likely to me that someone with such a narrow interest could make it through medical school, an internship, and residency where you have to deal with just about everything medical and then specialize in cardiac surgery. But then again I'm probably being too logical and over analyzing a TV show. |

| I was telling my partner about how her character seemed really "Rain Man" and that I didn't think it was a fair characterization to portray someone with AS in that light. He, rightly so, pointed out that I come across that way a lot of the time and don't even realize it. Maybe I'm just overly sensitive when it comes to the public's perception of us. It was just funny to think of her being portrayed like that when I, in fact, act the same way and didn't even realize it. |

| She is on tonight's episode. It's on right now so I don't know how it will end, but they're trying to get her to stay at the hospital so maybe she'll become a permanent character. |

| I am glad the character is on the show (I watch it regularly anyway) simply as a nice contrast to everybody else's emotional relationship BS (Oh wait, we forgot...we're doctors!) But yes, as I was *trying* to explain to my wife, it was a very over-the-top portrayal and that by that age she should be able to adapt better. I agreed with her stance about harvesting the 16yo girl's organs, but I would have known to keep my mouth shut. |

I like her, she is different from the others, and not so concerned with who is f***ing who.
She does remind me of me.
Hopefully I will see more of her character.
I don't know what Rain Man is... |
